I hope you are well,

From my experience, I can speak for BSc(Hons) Geography at the University of Huddersfield. I am just about to finish my first year of university, and my experience so far exceeded expectations. It is important to note that your experience will likely vary from university to university. In the meantime, you may want to have a look at “virtual open days” and request a prospectus to which universities take your interest.

I would like to describe my experience to date at The University of Huddersfield. At the beginning of the course, they offer a program called Flying Start for all students, including Geography and Biology. It allows us to break the ice with our peers and bring us up to speed on what the academic style of writing is like at university.

In terms of content, the first year has involved developing a broad understanding of Geography, including both Human and Physical topics. In my opinion, it has helped me explore and gain a better understanding of my interests in Geography. As a result, I changed my mind from Human Geography to continue with Physical Geography. Then in Year 2 and Final Year, you can begin to specialise your degree.

Also, I cannot discuss Geography without highlighting the field trips. You will likely experience multiple field trips in the first year taking advantage of the North of England from Liverpool to the Peak District, Leeds to Brighouse. Under normal circumstances, in Year 2, we would go abroad to develop our geographical skills and also on module related field trips.
