Biology or psychology?

Currently in year 12 studying Spanish, Geography and Psychology and I'm not 100% on what I want to do at uni yet.
I'm finding psych interesting but the essays stress me out and I was wondering if anyone can give me an insight in both subjects

Hey, I haven't studied any of those subjects at university. I know people who have studied Psychology and it seems like the course becomes more interesting over time, especially when you can specialise. However, you will have to either like essays or just get on with it.

My advice would be to select degrees involving Geography, Psychology and Spanish. Research universities you want to study. Look at everything from social life to course content. Make a pros and con for each. You may be able to do a joint degree, or choose Spanish as an optional module.

Keele university offer dual degree programmes. Not with that combination, but worth a look.

I studied Psychology and Spanish at sixth form. I think you need to reflect on the type of person you are, and maybe post university aspirations. Definitely look at university course modules because it can sway your decision.

Hey @H4ttie03! As @Pelola mentioned, have you considered a dual honours course on Psychology and Biology?
For example, Keele offers two of these courses on Psychology and Biology or Psychology and Human Biology. You can also choose language modules at Keele as an elective for free! Spanish is one of the popular options. Since you are studying Spanish at A level, you will start at a higher level in first year and progress to the next levels from semester to semester.

You can find out more about all of our Psychology dual honours courses thorough this link- https://www.keele.ac.uk//course-search/?q=psychology%20&hPP=20&idx=keele_main_COURSES&p=0&dFR%5BcourseLevelName%5D%5B0%5D=Undergraduate

I hope this helps and if you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask me on here!

Hi @H4ttie03,

I hope you are well during these unprecedented times,

I think the A Level’s you have selected are a great combination. One of my closest friend did similar A Levels but with a different language and now she has gone onto study Geography at degree level.

From my experience I can talk about A-Level Geography (AQA). In my opinion, I thoroughly enjoyed studying Geography and was lucky to have a great teacher who was very enthusiastic and passionate about the subject. I loved it so much- I wanted to study it a degree level.

Here is some advice I would like to share with you on how I revised for my Geography A Level exams. There were two key techniques which helped me throughout my studies. Whenever we went through a new topic, I spent 10/15 minutes looking up relevant news articles from the past 2 years. The exams questions are likely to have been written between that time, and it helps to create context of geographical issues during that period.

My second technique was creating “synoptic links” between other topics. Depending on the exam board in your longer answer questions, you may be asked to write about how one problem impacts another. For example, how the carbon cycle impacts the water cycle, how natural hazards impact the urban environment.

In regard to your subjects as a collective. I messaged my friend who did similar subjects to you- A Level Geography, A Level Psychology and A Level French and her goal is to work internationally. Hopefully planning to sort a work placement for 2021, or if COVID halts those plans she may take a masters abroad in France.

In short a language can be very useful if you decide that you want to work/study abroad.

In brief, she mentioned that Psychology was an interesting subject and agreed with the essays being very long. However, essay writing was something she was naturally good at so found it easier.

Have you thought about going to university- I understand it is not for everyone? But if a Geography Degree interests you, I am currently the 2nd Year of my studies. And would be happy to answer any general questions about studying and uni life.

All the best with your studies,

Best Wishes,
