Why do some colleges require written work, while others do not?

Is it suggestible for an applicant with mainly science a levels to apply for a college that requires written work, or is the language in the personal statement enough?

I was just wondering whether colleges that do not require written work put more emphasis on other factors (interviews, predicted grades) or do they just have lower standards for entry.

Is it suggestible for a student that does mainly science/math a levels (only essay-based subject: economics) to apply for a college that requires written work, to demonstrate their writing abilities, or just rely on their personal statement as their only demonstration of their writing abilities and apply for one that does not require written work.

This student doesn't have a suitable essay to give in. Is is wise to attempt to write 1/2 Cambridge-standard essays now, or just apply for a college that doesn't require written work and work more on the personal statement.

Some colleges ask for written work because they want to use it as a jumping off point at interview and/or to see how you write on a topic you're more familiar with. As written work needs to be something you've written in the course of your A Level (or equivalent) studies and marked by a teacher, writing essays now isn't really an option. If the student doesn't have written work because of the A Levels they're doing, there are two options. They can either choose a college that requires written work and ask for advice (it's a common enough situation that most colleges will have an appropriate suggestion) OR they can choose a college which doesn't require written work.
