Hiya,

Just based off of what we were told at my high school, yes. The thing is, there will be a lot of applicants who already meet the criteria, so already the competition for spaces between them is tough. Obviously, the more competitive the university the tougher the fight will be! That's why in high school we were really pushed to have lots of extra-curriculars and encouraged to do some volunteer work or get a part time job. When you're deciding between two students who have the same grades, things like that make the difference. Also, a good personal statement that shows genuine interest in the course and the university, and what you can do for the uni and vice versa.

But, that's not to discourage you from trying! Even with a 2 grade gap someone could very well could get a place - stranger things have happened.

I would also say try to apply rather early.

It depends on the university and the course. If its a very competitive university or course you will likely be rejected. A less competitive university or course you have a chance.

Prior to covid and CAGs 40% of students got into universities 2 or more grades below their offers. It is likely to be far stricter now because of grade inflation in the last 2 years and the uncertainty of whether there will be CAGS again or how strict any marking or mediation will be. Last year most leading universities including RG filled their spaces which hasnt been the case over recent years and had more students than places as a result of the confetti grades.

Many other universities had most of their courses in clearing and these are the ones who are likely to accept you 2 grades below.

The factors that will affect you are how full courses will be and how strict markings will be. If you apply with 2 grades below it is risky so make sure 2 or 3 of your options are at or below your grades. Having 1 or 2 above your grades is worth the risk as long as you are aware that there is a possibility of rejection. Certain very competitive universities like LSE or Imperial it would be pointless applying too and the same applies to Medicine and similar courses.
