Why does it sound like you're applying for a creative writing course  ? Just because you're not applying for English, doesn't mean your PS shouldn't be well written :p: I know what you mean though, tis hard to find a balance between sounding academic and sounding like a normal, well-balanced person .

Basically, try to sound articulate but don't cram it full of 'long words' especially if it's just making it sound forced. Don't be worried about sounding academic as that's what they're looking for. Also depends a bit on where you're applying as apparently while Oxbridge look for 70% academic, the others look more for 50/50.

I found the style the hardest part, just keep rewriting it until you sound keen & eager to start the course, academically motivated but not OTT & pretentious. Are there any more specific problems?

just be honest and tell them all about you, don’t try and make it look so fancy that it sort of disguises what you are really trying to say, really your first draft just don’t think about it and just write what you want to do, are doing and have done then worry about making it make sense, then finally tart it up a bit.
