Computer Science Applicants 2012! <3

Doesnt seem to be any threads on this so I thought I'd make one!

This is for all the 2012 Comp. Science/ Computing/ Electronic applicants!

After a LONG wait ive finally been made a conditional offer for computer science - hopefully transferring to the innovation course/ study abroad on the second year. Just for reference I think it would be helpful for any potential applicants if you could state the conditions of your offer etc

Conditional offer: DDM/ 280 UCAS points - BTEC National Business EDEXCEL

I'm gonna see how I feel after the first year - supposedly its far more intensive than standard comp science. Abroad sounds good too depending on where it'd be

First year is the same as straight Comp Sci, for Innovation students. I've just finished my first term of second year, and right now, it seems like a fair it of extra work, for not a lot. I dunno, I'm currently a bit disheartened with it all as my project is slowly going up the sh***ter - but it's a fair bit of work.

But, I think if you were really interested, it could be a good course. I don't want to put you off anything!

In all honesty, it just struck me as interesting cos it sounded cool. If its hard work and doesnt impact employability then it seems rather pointless - would much prefer studying abroad if its somewhere nice! What are you doing for your project? and what seems to be going wrong?!

Hmm...I don't really know about employability...I guess if you can present it all right, it may help...but meh. My project is making a web page to interact with a custom operating system for sensor nodes...and just the whole thing is being a bitch. My actual project is the actual front-end web page - but I can't get the rest of it working to even start with that! Argh - lol!

Don't let me effect your decisions too much though - just feeling old and cynical at the moment, I'd probably be saying the same if I was on the normal Computer Science course. Lots of other people enjoy it!

Ive currently got an offer of ABB for Computer Science. How easy would it be to change to a specialized course (Comp Sci with Software Engineering) in my first year?

It'd be a good idea to drop the uni an email asking, they might be able to change the course over for you. Kent offered me a place on their other computing programmes when I went for the interview there - stuck to straight CS though.

Yeah, it's no problem. First year is the same across all Comp Sci courses, and for that specialisation you do the exact same modules as the main Comp Sci course, just some things which are optional for other people are compulsory if you want the "with Software Engineering".

Hey, J1mjam.

I've applied for Computer Science with Industrial Experience MSci Hons and I was wondering whether it was possible to not to do the fourth (masters) year? Also, I've only achieved a B at GCSE Maths, does the course have a significant amount of Maths?

I thought I'd ask you as you're a student there ^_^

Your reply would be appreciated.

there isnt really any maths at all. but the course has changed since i started. so it is different for new students coming in. as for the masters year, i believe that is a part of industrial experience MSci. MSci meaning Masters and the industrial experience thatll be in the 4 th year. if you want to change your course to the standard Bsc im sure you could do that when you arrive, as the entry grades are lower i think. the department are really good at switching stuff around. i did the opposite to you and switched to the masters only at the start of this year.
