Nottingham or York for history

Please help! I have been offered Nottingham or York to do a history degree. Both offers are the same. I feel York has the better reputation for history but I am really worried that the social scene there might be a bit dead and I know that Nottingham has a great social reputation. Which one should I choose - the course is really important to me but so is my social life. I don't want to have to go to York and rely on trying to socialise in Leeds as that would defeat the whole object. Any advice would be gratefully received. Also as a female is Nottingham okay to go out at night in the city and finally does any one know the male:female ratio at Nottingham.
Thanks so much!

Female:male ratio is about 50:50 (for the university) and 55:45 (for history).

York i'd say, for sure, it has a pub for each day of the year, and is also a great uni, and i'm told that the nightlife in the town itself is great as well

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, don't go to York Uni, you'll be bored out of your mind, go to the Uni of Nottingham instead. I have a mate who studies at the Uni of York and he thinks its as boring as hell. I agree with him cos I went to see him for a weekend, it was totally dead, I've seen more life at an old peoples home! Also, the Uni of York was voted the most BORING UNIVERSITY IN BRITAIN, that says it all really.

I've also got a mate who studies at the Uni of Nottihgham I have not been to see him yet, but he tells me the social life is great. Also, don't worry too much about crime in Nottingham, cos crime takes place in every city across the world (even crappy cities like York).

Anyway, hardly anybody has heard of the Uni of York, but everybodys heard of the Uni of Nottihgham and knows it's a very good uni.

I hope that helps.

Cheers,

Wini

Also, when I went to York Uni to see my mate, there was a poster in the Student Union that was asking for witnesses of knife attack on a Student which took place ON CAMPUS. Further proof that nowhere is particularly safe.

The University of York ...nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Are you having a laugh, it's the uglist group of buildings I've seen in my life! If you think huge, grey buildings built in the 60's are pretty, then you need your head examined mate!

heres the link,

lol what would i choose, gangland nottingham with 1960s disasters violent nightclubs like ocean and the works, and scallies who walk around town thinking they re 50 cent......or

york a very attractive prettycity which is much more wealthy, has more culture, ALOT less crime and some pretty buildings

1960s buildings in york proved to me that you were lying

Andy my friend, get your facts right. When I mentioned the 60's buildings in York, I was refering to the buildings situated on the University of York campus, not the City of York, which I agree, does have some extremely pretty buildings, however the place is extremely boring!

nottinghams not exactly exciting unless you enjoy looking at scallies walking up and down columber street, or the teenage pregnant mums wheeling their babies around the 1960s disasters broadmarsh shopping centre or victoria centre

Why do you keep going on about that? Nobody cares what the readers of some posh travel magazine thought...

York is a beautiful city, but the Nottingham Campus is also quite lovely. I'm certainly glad to be going there.

I went on the York History open day, it was ok but it wasn't me. The buildings were horrid, and I found the atmosphere a bit claustraphobic. The course was one of the best I could have done but I don't think I could have stayed there for 3 years so I picked London instead.

lol, i totally agree. i was appalled by how ugly the york campus was, it really is bloody hideous, huge big concrete block buildings around a man made lake that smells like shit!
i must admit i loved the psychology course there though but i just couldn't imagine spending 3 years in a place like that so i didn't even consider it after my visit.

i must say in defence of york it is a really ood uni and the city is pretty nice too, but if it was me i'd be off to nottingham.

as a city i'd agree and say york is much more attractive. but the campus at york is awful, i'm not saying that nottingham is fantastic (tbh i think the uni is a bit overrated), but i'd choose it over york anyday as theres heaps more to do their.
