Thoughts on Accommodation

Hi guys. Quick question.

I have an unconditional offer to York to study Criminology, and I'm doing my room application now. I was wondering what current students or even prospective ones, thought about the accommodation.

Stupid though it is, I still haven't had a chance to take a tour of the uni, so have no real clue about how things actually are, other than the website. (Which, tbh, i find pretty confusing to follow).

I want to be close to my courses, but also able to access different facilities/locations with relative ease.

Where do most applicants think they want to apply for/ what do current students feel about their own residence? It would be nice to get a feel for it as i struggle in vain to find a time to visit.

TL;DR - wheres the best play to stay?

Hi Effy,

I'm not a student but I hope I can help!

Criminology is based in two departments on Heslington West: Sociology (http://www.york.ac.uk/about/maps/campus/#sociology), and Social Policy and Social Work (http://www.york.ac.uk/about/maps/campus/#social-policy-and-social-work).

It's really easy and quick to get around our campus no matter which college you're in but, if you're very keen to be very close to both departments, I recommend looking at the colleges on Heslington West. If there's a particular type of room that you would like (eg Catered? Ensuite?) I can help you narrow it down a bit more!

Don't forget you can change your application up to 31 July, so there's still plenty of time to do research. It's worth making your initial application now though, as we'll be taking date range of applications into account when we allocate rooms.

Hope that's a help!

Thank you so much!

I ideally want a self-catered en-suite single and if possible one not too far from my lectures.
I also plan to do drama and sport if i can get involved with both while at York - i don't know if that would impact my choice in colleges.

Hi Effy,

In terms of the type of room/location you want, I'd recommend looking at Vanbrugh, Alcuin, James and Halifax as they all offer self-catered ensuite rooms and they're close to your departments (although lectures can take place anywhere across campus). Derwent is close too but I don't think it has any self-catered ensuite rooms, only catered.

You can get involved in sport and drama whichever college you're in! James and Halifax both have quite sport reputations because of their proximity to the Heslington West sports facilities, but all colleges participate in sport (http://collegesport.yusu.org/)

There are drama rehearsal spaces dotted around the various colleges, but they're all easy to get to and any student can use them - not just members of a particular college.

I hope that's a help!
