Why did he do this?

So I got into the lift to go to the ground floor to get out the building at uni as I was on one of the top floors. There was already someone in the lift, he started making weird faces as if he was uncomfortable that I got in the lift and it felt uncomfortable for me too and he got out on the next floor and two guys came in. One of them asked me are you going down as well? I said yeah but it was obvious I was going down because the lift was going down not back up. It was awkward as I could feel them both staring at me the whole time and when the lift opened to the ground floor they let me go first which was even more awkward. Ugh! Why do these things always happen to me?
