How to Apply for University in the United Kingdom as an International Student

This weeks ‘International Students Guide to studying in the United Kingdom’, will focus on how to apply for university in the UK. Depending on the course you are applying for or which university you wish to study at, the application process will be different.



Understanding UCAS :banana2:

Applications for all Undergraduate courses, PGCE courses and the MA Social Work must be made online through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). All undergraduate course which are offered have unique UCAS codes which student’s uses to apply for specific courses.

Postgraduate Applications :banana:

Applications for postgraduate taught/research degrees are made directly to the University. You can find out more information on the university website.

When do I apply for UCAS?:bee:

There are a few key application deadline dates that international students should be aware of when applying to a UK university.

15th October 2020: Medicine, dentistry, vet science, Oxford, Cambridge

15th January 2020: All other courses

25th February 2020: UCAS Extra opens

What will you need to do in the application? :clap2:

To apply for university in the UK there are specific requirements that you need to submit in your application. Note: this will be different for Oxbridge, Medicine, Dentistry and Vet Science. Please visit the website for the course that you wish to apply for so specific requirements.

You will need to fill in an application with all your personal details.

Add the course choices. You will need the university’s unique UCAS code and the course code.

Add your qualifications. Make sure you add as much detail as possible including grades and results. Qualifications are listed by name and country. However, if your qualification isn't listed, don’t worry as you can just add it into the ‘other’ box.

4. Add a personal statement. This is your opportunity to show what makes you unique and desirable as a prospective student. There are plenty of guides to personal statements online to help you out. As an international student, you will also need to explain why you want to study in the UK, your English language skills and any English courses you have taken, and why you wish to be an international student rather than studying at home.
