Dropping out from course, what are good backup options?

I posted that I was struggling in the postgraduate forum, but only got one response. I am just finding the course I am doing Marketing Communications very intense, and I just don't feel postgraduate study is for me, but I still want to go into the pr/marketing field. I spoke about this with my parents and my mum in particular isn't very keen as she doesn't know what else I would be doing. So what are my options? I am currently furloughed by a local pub, and that's my only form of income right now. I want to get more work experience in industry especially in the summer, maybe try and save up and get driving sorted. Anyone got any good advice?

Hi Anonymous,

Have you considered using your current marketing knowledge to do some freelance work? A great place to start could be to look at designing social assets or running social pages for clients. Alternatively have you thought about applying for an internship? This is a great experience to learn whilst on the job and get paid too!

I have thought about internships yes, trying to find summer ones. Sometimes it’s a problem they want someone experience, which is counter-productive though as you’re meant to gain experience on an internship.

Hey Anon! Do you have a undergraduate degree and are specialising in Marketing Comms at postgrad level yeah? One thing I can maybe suggest to help yourself stand out a bit when it comes to jobs is to think about other ways you can show your skills in marketing/pr that can help you with the lack of experience issue. Some people I attended uni with (I studied International Business & Marketing) started writing blogs on things that interested them (fashion, travel and things like that) or even started using Instagram as a way of improving their skillset. They could show off their copywriting skills writing blogs, as well as really practice on the aesthetic of a webpage and learn quite a lot from doing that. When you go to interview this is a great way to show off some initiative and it'll be a bit different from what most candidates bring to the table I'd say!

With regards to your course, have you managed to speak to any course tutors about how you're feeling? Everything is so strange in the world at the moment and I think uni studies on top of that can really get the better of us at times, but maybe having a chat about your career etc with someone in the university you might feel like you have a bit more direction? That being said though, lots of jobs don't require postgraduate degrees so I think if you can build up your CV somehow (I know this is much easier said than done) you should be able to be considered by most employers!

Best of luck with everything! I know the job market isn't easy at the moment but I'm sure you'll get there :hugs:

I know the struggle! I had the same difficulties when trying to find an internship for my placement year. It is possible to find something without specific marketing experience or even employment experience. I got my marketing internship at Universal Pictures having never had a job before, you just need to show that you meet the requirements through education or extra curricular experience. It's tricky but not impossible.

Have you tried doing some online courses? This could be a useful way to build experience
