Hey @safarisafa

I wanted to give you my opinion on the degree i took which was BA Marketing at University of Hull (you can find details about the course HERE if you are interested). During my first year everyone from Marketing, Management, International business etc studied the same modules which include Accounting and Finance, Business Environments, Marketing and Human Resource Management. This helps all students to understand the key aspects of running a business and it also allows you to find out what you are really interested, which for me was Marketing. Many business related courses across the country run in the same way in regards to first year being a mixed bag of modules.

Moving on to second year I studied modules such as Branding, Marketing Intelligence, Buyer Behaviour and Integrated Marketing Communications and moving on to third year i studied modules such as Digital Marketing, Strategic Marketing, International Marketing and Services Marketing. So as you can see the modules in a straight Marketing degree are very heavily focussed, after first year, and not much around other aspects of running a business (there are some of course and some modules are optional so in second year I took a Supply Chain module). If you are solely interested in working in the marketing sector I would say a BA Marketing is perfect, however if you are wanting to also learn about other factors which helps to run a business then perhaps a BA Business Management and Marketing degree would be better.

I have now gone on to study a masters degree in Advertising and Marketing as I really love Marketing, however some of my classmates have gone on to work as digital marketing officers, marketing officers/executives, client managers, product development colleagues etc. the list is endless. Doing a Marketing degree or a Business Management and Marketing degree will open a lot of doors for you. The best advice I can give would be to research what universities you are interested in and have a look at their modules and see what ones you think you would be most interested in. Another contributing factor to choose just Marketing was having less exams and more coursework as this is what i personally prefer

I hope this helps in some way and please let me know if you have any other questions at all!

Hi @safarisafa
I'm a second year Business Management (Marketing) student at the University of Surrey and I think that, at least for me, that was the right choice. I think it's a very useful and versatile degree as i've studied and continue to study modules from different parts of business, rather than just studying marketing itself. I think that gives you a better overview of business and how organisations work while specialising in marketing.

I've had modules such as ethics, consumer behaviour, international fashion marketing and entrepreneurship. Most of my modules have been really interesting and i've had really good lectures. You can see the degree specifications and entry requirements for Surrey here.

At the end of the day, you should study something you're really passionate about as that will give you more chances of doing better and you'll enjoy it more. I'd go over the different modules in each degree and decide from there.

Choosing a uni with a good environment is also important. I love the greenery on Surrey's campus and it's comunity.

I hope that helped.

Hi @safarisafa,

I hope you are well. I am a Final Year BSc Hons Marketing Management Student at Lancaster University. I thought I would reply to your question because I was in a very similar position to you before University. I was torn between Business Management or Marketing but the more I attended University Open Days, I noticed I kept listened heavily to the Marketing aspects, so thought this was the direction for me.

Fast forward a few years, and I am now in my final of a Marketing degree and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. You are right, there are so many degrees out there so I would really encourage you to continue actively researching universities and courses. Lancaster alone has around 7 marketing degrees, you can check these out here. I personally chose the Marketing Management degree as it includes a placement year which I finished last year at Johnson & Johnson. I have fortunately secured a graduate position with the same company for later this year, so it just shows the great things you can go onto achieve.

As Lancaster has the longest established Marketing department in the UK, I feel there has been a great balance of all areas of marketing. For example, I have studied Digital Marketing, Advertising, Social Media Marketing as well as more strategic modules like Brand Strategy, Strategic Marketing, Strategic Negotiations, Market Research, Consumer Behaviour etc. I feel like I have had a great mixture. As the Marketing department is within the Lancaster University Management School (LUMS), the course has been quite flexible and I have chosen a couple of business modules as well. I really feel like I have therefore had a great balance which seems to be what you are looking for with keeping your options open for both Marketing and Business.

My advice would be to continue doing lots of research, look at the course structures and speak to current students like myself as this really helped me figure out the University that was best for me! Also, I would definitely recommend looking into the careers services and graduate prospects of the University. The careers team has been one of the best things about my time at Lancaster and having a dedicated Marketing Careers Coach has really helped me. You can find more about LUMS Careers here.

I hope the above information is helpful. Please reply if you have more questions about a marketing degree or Lancaster University. I would be more than happy to help. If not, I wish you the best of luck with your applications .

Have a great day.

Hi @crisspy,

Of course! So there is a lot of information about the campus here and you can watch a virtual tour here if that is useful . The campus is set in beautiful countryside and there is much going on there - from cafes, restaurants, shops, library, learning zone, doctors etc! Everything you could want/need is pretty much on campus including award winning accommodation. There are also 9 colleges on campus, each has their own bar, making it a vibrant place. Some of my favourite things about the Lancaster University campus is the woodland walk and also extravs which are parties that every college hosts in summer term on campus.

The city of Lancaster is nice, lots of bars, restaurants, clubs, cafes, shops, castle, museum, theatre, sports bars, cinema etc! I love the burrito bar and independent pizza restaurant in Lancaster. I also love taking a walk down the canal or visiting Williamson Park. Lancaster is a really nice place to live and the train station is central in the city so you can get to London within a couple of hours, or even other bigger cities nearby like Manchester. I have even been for a day trip to Edinburgh from Lancaster before. It is also nice to visit the sea at Morecambe which is only 20 mins away from Lancaster or even take a trip to the beautiful countryside in the Lake District which is so close. It is a lovely part of the UK!

I hope this gives you a bit of an insight into life at Lancaster. There is another university in Lancaster, making it a great student city.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.
