To be good at 5k, do I really need to be running this distance in training?

I hate running distance (I’m more into sprinting) but would like to set my goals to improve at middle distance and the occassional 5k. I’ll be doing interval training once per week with a running group.
The rest of the time (as I hate running miles) do you think a 2 mile run every other day would suffice in improving my 5k time? I’d prefer 1 mile really but could cope with 2 and it’l be fun getting my time down.

I know 5k would be 1 mile extra what do you think?

2 miles is pushing yourself. Try to incorporate some strength training into your routine. Elliptical trainers are worth a go if you like the Gym.

Keep a track of what you do everyday.

Try following a structured programme like Couch to 5k, which mixes it up a bit so you're not just running distances.

And no, you don't need to run the full distance, though you are expecting to do a third as much. I didn't do more than 21 miles in training before I ran an official marathon, but I only needed to do less than 25% more.
