Msc. Marketing: Which University to choose

Hi All,

I am planning to study the MSc. Marketing program this year and have received offers from Cranfield, Durham and Bath.
I am confused between these 3 business schools.
I am an international student from India and I have about 5 years of work ex and want to get into brand management. My priority is to add a big brand name(business school) to my CV.

I would be really grateful for any insight/advice you can provide to help me make my decision.

Thanks.

Hi @Mohan94

Well done for getting so many brilliant offers!
Choosing which uni course best suits you is a deeply personal decision, and the factors will vary in importance from one person to another. On top of that, what make one person prefer one course may be the reason another person doesn’t choose that uni, but I hope I can give you some information from the Cranfield perspective that might help inform your decision!

First of all, you spoke about ‘brand name’ and reputation. Cranfield has amazing relationships with many major employers globally, and shows the quality of the education here in many ways.
The course quality is evidenced by the accreditation, being one of the few UK degrees to be accredited by the Market Research Society (MRS). It is additionally accredited by the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM). This means that while studying, you can work towards achieving the MRS Certificate in Market & Social Research, and/or achieve CIM’s professional marketing qualifications and awards alongside your Cranfield degree.
On top of this, the course is ranked 5th in the UK and 15th in the world by QS World University Rankings: Masters In Marketing 2022.
The Cranfield faculty are experts in their field and have considerable industry experience, and are supported by a team of international visiting industry speakers and professors who also bring the latest thinking and best practice into the classroom. They work to ensure graduates are highly employable, well rounded, and competitive in the job market.
This is reinforced by the Practice Advisory Board, who inform the design and development of the master's in marketing programme. Comprising leading figures from the world of marketing, it recommends additions and amendments to the course to reinforce its relevance to the modern marketing world. Both of these ensure that Cranfield graduates are competitive when entering the job market, with the most relevant and cutting-edge knowledge.

While at Cranfield, you will be supported by the Careers and Employability Service. They offer so many different services, including 1:1 coaching on a variety of topics, help improving your CV, interview skills, and much more. I’ll leave a link with more details in case you are interested in what they can do for you:
https://www.cranfield.ac.uk/study/careers-service
During your course you will receive support and guidance to help you plan an effective strategy for your personal and professional development, whether you are looking to secure your first management role, or wanting take your career to the next level.
Cranfield Strategic Marketing MSc graduates have secured jobs with a diverse range of companies including Vodafone, TJX, Kerry, Christian Dior, Henkel, GE, Schlumberger, Ernst & Young, Estée Lauder, Coca-Cola, Mars, Beiersdorf, KMPG Nunwood and Microsoft. Their roles have included Customer Insight Consultant, Junior Manager, Buying and Merchandising Graduate Programme trainee, Marketing Manager and Associate Consultant.

Even though you have previous experience, getting a chance to demonstrate real-world skills during your course is a great way to ensure employers recognise that your skills will be easily transferable and valuable in their team. The Cranfield course includes case studies for this, as well as real hands-on experiences.
Each year, the Marketing Consultancy Project is provided by external business client that will give you real insight into an industry, what it is really like working in the UK business culture, and even develop contacts and network before graduating. This is on top of the feedback you will receive from both your Cranfield supervisors and an industry expert, after presenting your recommendations to the company leaders at the final client presentation. Companies students have worked with include Google, Nike, Cobra Beer, InterContinental Hotels Group, Acer and Sainsbury’s.
Additionally, each student will undertake an individual thesis project. This can be either company-sponsored, or an empirical project in an area of marketing you are passionate about (usually involving direct research with either marketing professionals/managers or with customers).

Of course, I can’t cover every detail of the course and university, so if you have any specific questions or areas of interest just let me know and I will do my best to find answers for you 😊
Additionally, you can talk to current students in the School of Management and the Marketing course here, to see their personal experiences:

Best of luck in your decision 😊

I am looking for something similar. Have received offers from University of South Wales and Kingston University. I am really unsure which university to go ahead with? Can someone suggest?

If you're based in the UK, then I recommend to do a course that might be accredited by professional marketing qualifications.
These qualifications and degrees are by no means required in order to do anything in marketing (employers would still hire you based on relevant skills and experience over qualifications), but if you're looking for professional accreditation to help shortcut some of the criteria in marketing, then I recommend looking into which degree would provide you with the most exemptions or accreditation. See:
https://www.theidm.com/employability-schemes/for-students/qualifications-for-university-students
https://www.cim.co.uk/qualifications/cim-accredited-degree/
https://www.mrs.org.uk/learningCPD/accredited-centres-list (or https://www.mrs.org.uk/learningCPD/masters for master's degrees)

If you are unsure about the sort of career that you want, see the following job profiles:
https://nationalcareers.service.gov.uk/job-profiles/marketing-executive
https://nationalcareers.service.gov.uk/job-profiles/market-research-executive
https://nationalcareers.service.gov.uk/job-profiles/marketing-manager
https://nationalcareers.service.gov.uk/job-profiles/social-media-manager
https://nationalcareers.service.gov.uk/job-profiles/market-researcher

The most important/widely recognised qualification is probably the CIM. The IDM comes close second. The MRS is relevant if you want to go into marketing research.

I don't know what your specific career ambitions are or what specific degree you are doing, so it might be a little difficult to say. However, a quick comparison between South Wales and Kingston might suggest Kingston is the more favoured choice. You might want a second opinion from a marketer regarding the above.

If you're looking for brand name, I would say Durham tops out from the list. However, I would also vouch for Bath's reputation of its business school.

As far as I know, a degree in marketing is not a prerequisite to go into brand management in the UK. I would assume this would be the case in India as well (you might want a second opinion from those in marketing in India).

I don't know how well the reputation of these universities will fare in India, so I would go by the accreditation of the professional marketing qualifications that are recognised in India. From MRS, CIM, and IDM that are recognised in the UK, it seems CIM is recognised in India. As such, I recommend looking at: https://www.cim.co.uk/qualifications/cim-accredited-degree/

Unfortunately, Bath's course is not listed in the list of accredited degrees, but Durham and Cranfield are. If you're going for a general MSc in Marketing, then it seems Durham's course is accredited as well as Cranfield's Strategic Marketing.

Having looked at all the modules in all 3 degrees, it seems that only Cranfield's degree cover anything in brand management. See:
https://www.durham.ac.uk/business/courses/n5k609/#course-details-1077465
https://www.cranfield.ac.uk/som/masters-courses/strategic-marketing#Details
https://www.bath.ac.uk/courses/postgraduate-2023/taught-postgraduate-courses/msc-marketing/
Otherwise, I would go by the university with the course that you would enjoy the most.

In terms of preference, I would go for Durham's degree. You can get a second opinion on this should you wish.

Hi, I'm in a similar situation as well and have received offers from Cranfield and Uni of Leeds. I'm still waiting to hear back from Durham. Have you made a choice yet?
