Undergrad Dissertation

This might seem like a silly question but my diss advisor has pretty much been non-existent since the start and I still have many questions about it.

I have currently 6000 words for my empirical dissertation (10000 words required) and finished the literature review & methodology (what datasets to use, what methodology for analysis - difference in difference - etc.)

A lot of the empirical studies I have read so far on the topic have models (equations) that they have created to predict the results. Do I need to do this? Can't I just input the data and get the results and discuss the findings?

Is this expected for a undergrad empirical dissertation?

First of all, what course are you studying? :colondollar:

Second, is the 10k word limit inclusive of lit review and methodology? Have you included those in your 6k total thus far? Just so I know exactly where you're at.

Finance and Economics

10k word limit is inclusive of lit review and methodology. And yes included in the 6k total. I'll probably shave off some words during the editing phase, but not by more than 500-1000 give or take.

I'm just a bit lost on the extent at which I am supposed to go to. Every single literature that are economics related seems to build their own model but is that necessary for undergrad dissertation?

Okay, with an empirical study I'm assuming they're expecting an evaluation section too? I would make this incredibly meaty, especially if there are large limitations on your research (there certainly was on mine  )

I'm confused about what you mean by "build their own model"?

So for example, they'll present equations to estimate the possible findings if that makes sense before presenting their results/discussion. It has nothing to do with the actual dataset they use to present the results. It is usually found in the methodology sections of economic papers. Or they will have a separate "Models section"

Whilst my own dissertation was in the social sciences, I am not an economics specialist so I honestly don't know the answer to the models section bit. This would be one to email your supervisor about, and continue emailing.

I did ask a question about evaluations - will this be a required thing for you?
