Is University of Law an actual university?

It's not on any league tables. Is it a good place to study law? Is it famous?

Is it real? Yes. It’s a for-profit university.

It isn’t in league tables - it is a specialist university and league tables rank more traditional and not for profit universities.

Is it a good place to study law? That depends what you’re looking for. Personally I wouldn’t recommend it for undergrad law unless you’re a mature student looking for convenience. It’s stronger in postgrad as that’s the core of what it offered when it was the College of Law.

Is it famous? Not really.

Hi there

I am a student ambassador studying at the ULAW Bristol campus and can confirm that ULAW is an actual university! ULAW has 16 campuses in the UK as well as international campuses in Hong Kong, Berlin and an Online campus - so quite a few!

Are you looking at undergraduate or postgraduate study?

I am currently doing my LPC at ULAW so can only give my perspective of whether its a good place to study (which may be slightly biased and based on the Bristol campus!)

The main attractions of ULAW for me was the employability and teaching aspects of it so if those are factors at the top of your list then it is definitely a good place to study at. In terms of employability, there are loads of Pro Bono opportunities that the uni runs which is great for gaining experience, giving back to the community and is attractive to future employers. The employability team are also very helpful/approachable and have close links with a lot of local firms which can be great when getting advice/help if you have an interview, for example. In terms of the teaching, over 90% of the tutors are practicing (or have practiced as) solicitors/barristers which means you are learning from those with extensive practical experience which differentiates ULAW from other universities. The Bristol campus is small and the quantity of people in workshops is too which means you actually get to know your tutors which I have found enhances the quality of teaching.

Is there anything in particular that you are looking for in a place to study? If there is then let me know and I'll get back you!

Hi - my daughter has a place to start this September. I’m just wondering if your opinions still stands…

The University of Law is a business which has developed from the old College of Law, which was where aspirant solicitors took their professional exams. The UoL is not a university in the traditional sense, and it's not a good place to do an undergraduate degree. The quality of the law degree is poor, and the University offers little in the way of the typical undergraduate experience. The UoL is popular with those taking postgraduate professional qualifications, where the quality of the course doesn't much matter.

It shouldn't be real, the quality of teaching and degrees there is terrible😂

I tried to mentor a recently qualified lawyer who had a so-called first class degree in law from the University of Law. Her ignorance of basic legal concepts was startling. She did not have a law degree worthy of the name. She had merely purchased a duff product from a commercial outfit.
Technically yes.

UoL stats about employability are BS, because loads of people do their postgrad professional exams there. They are employable because of their undergraduate degrees.

The "taught by real lawyers" thing is also BS. It means "taught by people who failed to get taken on in chambers or law firms."

which campus. had my first day today. Seemed alright. Social life looks dead here classes only have 10-15 people. Most people here are unserious couldn’t see them working as anything in the legal sector, this is cus they have loads of people who have done foundation years or they take loads of idiots on through clearing, the standard grade offer is very standard nothing extremely low or high on the other hand, if you are a serious student - a person who just does their work and goes home (no socialising) it’s probably the best environment due to the small classrooms sizes and small campus. In regards to attendance they give u code in the lecture to enter into the app to confirm attendance, they also ask you to turn on location services to do this, so there’s no way you can lie about your attendance or tap your card and go home. A lot of international students here probably making up 40% of the numbers weird for a uni campus that is small. Overall it feels very very dead here the lecturers are saying towards the end of the month there will be more people but regardless u can’t have the “uni experience” here. i’m going to try to get a 1st in my first year and if it’s really bad i will try to switch to uni of birmingham.

probably not on a league table as the campuses are small which makes the variety of courses smaller. It is ranked good for teaching quality.

University rankings are mostly nonsense.

People who do postgraduate professional courses at ULaw are employable not because they have studied at ULaw but because of degrees obtained elsewhere.
