Uni Laptop Recommendations

Hi!
I'm starting university in September and I'm looking for a new laptop, but have no idea what features I'm looking for ( what I do and don't need). I'm doing medicine so I'd like for it to last a minimum of 5 years, within a reasonable price range, and something I can carry in my bag to class if needed.
I've never bought a laptop before (usually my dad just buys it when there's an offer and doesn't really look at the features so he and I are kinda clueless.) I've never bought an Apple product but have seen a lot of people buy MacBook's, but I don't know if its worth it price and all.
Any recommendations?

Buy a second hand ipad and a keyboard (+ pen both doesn't have to be apple...) that way you can annotate and draw as well as typing, its also very portable and durable
