The Ethical Dilemma of Self-Driving Cars:

If an autonomous car faces an unavoidable accident, should it prioritize the safety of its passengers or pedestrians?

If a human driver faces an unavoidable accident, should they prioritise their own safety (and that of their passengers) or that of pedestrians?

i’m still conflicted, but mercedes’ stance is “If you know you can save at least one person, at least save that one. Save the one in the car,” (von Hugo), which makes sense. also, lots of people( especially the very rich (i’m generalising here)) might not want to buy a car knowing it wouldn’t put their life first. however we don’t know if self driving cars will be affordable for the masses for quite a while, and so it brings up an argument of privilege.

i’m not very knowledgeable in the topic but that’s my thoughts on it

Hopefully self driving cars will bring such enormous safety benefits that this becomes a largely academic discussion. Assuming that accidents can be modelled and managed you would have to embed rules similar to those used in major incidents triage, aiming to preserve the most life

Most people when driving are commuting. If all those commuters can stop being selfish and just rideshare/public transport, it makes the roads a lot less busy for the rest of us who drive, for example holidays, driving for fun, seeing family, buying 6 foot long cupboards on facebook marketplace etc. It is nothing but selfish for Londoners who live 40 miles out of the town to commute every single day - its bad for the environment, its bad for congestion, and it ruins the roads for those who need it and don't have a very easy commute by train or bus. Personal attacks aren't appreciated either but thanks

People are getting lazier by the day and having a self driving car will only increase that... theres no need for them end of

Hang on. It's other people being selfish, inconveniencing you 'driving for fun' at rush hour?

Commuting by car when they could easily go by train etc is obviously selfish. This isn't the point of the original post however.

Indeed, get a taxi if you want to go for a drive for fun.

Get a bus to go on holiday.

Get a taxi when buying 6 foot long cupboards on facebook marketplace.

Get a bus to see family.
