Hey @Soban06

Great question! I've seen a few posts on here about students struggling to make friends, and I'd recommend to those in this same boat to join a club or society as that way you'll be around people with similar interests to you, which I think helps make conversation that bit easier! I'd also recommend looking into volunteering opportunities and becoming a student ambassador, both are fab ways of meeting new people. You may meet friends on your course, in your halls, at a freshers event, there's so many opportunities to meet new people, just have a smile on your face, try start up a conversation (could be a simple question about how they are finding the work load, if they're attending a freshers event, what their fave tv show is etc).

For me budgeting money - putting money aside and having a weekly/monthly amount I can spend helped with that. Eating healthy is another challenge I had early on as a student too. It's so tempting to go for junk food and the quick easy options but planning meals and making the effort has made me feel much better and means I can take leftovers into campus and save money too.

Hi @Soban06,

Getting used to moving away for the first time - its something you get use to and it is easier to settle in as you have the distraction of freshers week and the welcome fair which keep you quite busy. Also everyone else who has moved away is likely feeling the same so its easy to then confide in someone.

Not getting on with everyone such as flatmates, I found I had this in 2nd year and the best way to cope was just having plans with my friends from 1st year and making sure to get out whether that popping into town or going to the gym/doing classes.

Hey @Soban06
I think one of things to be prepared about is having to attend morning lectures. Many people definitely straggle with getting up on time, get ready and show up to their 9 am lectures.

When I have 9 am lectures, I used to try to wake up extra early and and work out in the morning to it gave me a good boost for the morning lecture and helped me not fall asleep.
All the very best for starting uni!

Hi there,

The biggest challenge for me was moving away from home and leaving all my friends. I did feel lonely from time to time when I first arrived, but I overcame it by joining sports club, working part time as a student ambassador and volunteering at the charity, which allowed me to make some new friends.

Another challenge would be balancing my time between studying and socialising, because university life has so much to offer and I wanted to be a part of everything. I struggled at first, but I then realise sometimes we simply can't have it all and assignments always should be prioritised!

Hope you find this helpful,
Sophia:smile:

Hi @Soban06

I found that when I first started university I had a lot of new admin tasks that I struggled to juggle around freshers week, such as paying rent and registering with a new GP surgery. My advice would be to break these down into individual tasks and take it one step at a time. It'll tail off after the first few weeks of term!
