Does the university you go to really matter when it comes to job opportunities. If i were to go to a russell group and get a third and if someone went to a school who didnt go to a resell group but got a first or a 2:1 who would be better. Does russell group really matter in undergraduate degree.

'Russell Group' is a marketing concept invented by a bunch of the posh Unis - its actually meaningless.
Unis like Bath and St Andrews are not part of it. It doesnt seem to have done them or their graduates any harm.

PS. A Third class degree is a waste of time wherever you got it and you'd probably have been asked to leave long before you graduated anyway.

Hey

I think the university you go to does matter to an extent when it comes to job opportunities however in my opinion I feel like your grades matter more. I've got mates who've graduated from below the top 50 universities in the UK with the same grades as someone who graduated from a top 20 university but was able to land the job due to acing the interview. All in all, I think that your question is dependent on the employer. I hope this helps you.

Hi,

I think that your overall performance is more important than the university you attended as with careers such as nursing or healthcare, everyone will have the same training no matter which university they attend as there are nationwide qualification requirements set out by governing bodies. As long as you've met the job requirements in job applications then the university you attended shouldn't matter.

I hope this helps,

And what sort of job was that - and what was their degree subject - and how did they know who else had applied for the job - or which Uni they had all attended?

Hi there,

My mate went to the University of Brighton and studied BSc Accounting and Finance. He was able to get a role in a boutique investment bank in London. He knew who had applied for the job as he applied to same jobs as his mate who went to Imperial College and went through the same interview process together. He told me that acing the interview is what got him the role and his preparation for the interview took a week, which is why I believe that going to a prestigious university doesn't guarantee you a good job but proper preparation does.

Kind regards

Hi there,

I think that it's a combination of grades, experience and university. It is just best to get the best grades and the most experience you can. While going to a Russell Group university is a great achievement and may potentially make your application come off better to employers vs a student with the same grade from a non-Russell Group university, if they have more relevant experience or a higher grade, then I think that would come across more prominently.

I hope that makes sense.

All the best,

Hi, I think it really doesn't matter which university you go to. For example, SOAS is not a Russell Group university but it is a world renowned institution with specialist courses on the Middle East, Asia and Africa. For example its development studies department is ranked 2nd in the world. It's best to achieve top grades and get a well-rounded university experience and enjoy your degree rather than going to a russell group uni as that will help you to get better job opportunities for the future.

Hope this helps!
