Idk about average but my flatmates at Bristol doing politics and IR get about 6-8 contact hours a week.
I get the impression it’s a lot of independent reading. Most courses you can have a good work life balance if you use your time well eg don’t just spend all day sleeping then roll out of bed to go clubbing everyday
