Advice on Year 2 Accommodation

I'm in my first year at uni and live in halls (en-suite room), everyone is talking about second-year accommodation already and TBH it's stressing me out because I am in a rough situation. I moved away from home (London) to come here so staying there is not an option and I did have a group of friends I was going to be sharing with but that crumbled lol. I think it's for the best if I rent a room on my own as opposed to a house share - as due to my mental health I really don't want to find another group and have that fail too as that's just too tragic and unreliable. I just would like some advice on when and how and if I should do this, from someone in a similar situation/that has done this too. My budget is pretty decent - I have a part-time job and also receive over 9k in student finance a year so I could comfortably go for a place that is £700 a month. Is that realistic? Also how would renting a place work when I go home for summer or Christmas? Thank you (:

Hi there,
While it's never too early to start thinking about your second year student accommodation, it's good to explore your options and you will have time to do so. You're not alone in feeling this way, for example when I was in my second year at uni, I didn't have anyone in mind to live with so I actually looked at studio accommodation briefly before booking an ensuite room in private accommodation and making friends there.

I'd suggest to do some searching on what accommodation is available in your area and make a list of pros and cons for each. If you'd prefer to live by yourself, a studio might be an option. You could maybe look for a private student accommodation that offers studios but that also has additional facilities onsite, so you can still socialise and feel part of a student community.

Hope this helps!

hi, im also going into second year in 2024. i prefer living alone aswell especially when you dont know if you will be friends with that group in a years time. i booked a studio for private accom. i booked with unipol so was quiet easy but many places such as unite students have opened applications for next year for halls. if you dont want to go through your uni you can always pm me and i can help you find some options for studios or halls if you want one of those.

Hi @riannelm,

It can be tricky when everybody is talking about getting a house in second year when it feels like you haven't known people for that long. I felt like this and it was quite stressful deciding what to do.

In the end I booked with a student halls and wrote that I wanted to live with second years and made sure it had an ensuite as this felt less daunting than a house share with people you don't know as I still had my own space and my own bathroom but I could still socialise in the communal areas. I have found this has worked really well and this could be an option for you to consider.

You could also look at studio rooms, these tend to be more expensive but if you have a decent budget this could be a good idea as you have your own room, kitchen and bathroom but some places still have communal areas for you to be able to socialise still. This gives you the best of both worlds and you might still meet some good friends while doing this.

As for staying over summer, it depends where you decide to stay. Some halls have the option to stay over summer and just pay extra for this (mine did) but it depends on the halls.

Hope this helps,
Lucy - SHU student ambassador
