Should I ask a boy in my class (who I like as a friend) to formal. I am 99% sure he won't be bringing a girl unless I ask him as he isn't that way inclined but is going to a very homophobic all boys school. Should I ask him? I also don't have anyone to go with and I don't know if I would be comfortable going alone.

If you're "99% sure he won't be bringing a girl" and you "don't have anyone to go with" and "don't know if I would be comfortable going alone", then it sounds like a great plan. Go for it.
