Will I be ok?

Hi all, I’m in year 13 in Wales and have applied for my uni choices. I am working class and a child of a single mother, and she really doesn’t have much money to give me to support me if I went to uni. If I go to a uni outside of where I live, will I be able to afford it? I accept I’ll definitely need to work while studying, but just wondering will I be okay?

Have you checked what loans you can for?

I’ve seen this before, I’d be entitled for £9,950 if I stay in Cardiff but admittedly I’d be staying at home, I like the look of royal Holloway and there I’d get £14,635 I believe, and everywhere else I’d get £11,720. The most important part is the fact that I do pay the lowest possible of those loans back which is incredibly useful, however Im just worried about whether I’d have enough when I get to uni as I’ll be by myself.

Most people cope and get a part-time job if they need a bit more.

Look at accommodation costs in different unis too.

What are you studying? If it is a degree that will pay well after graduation, or after time, you should be fine.
It is very expensive nowadays, however you can make a budget for cooking or eating out, shop for deals, get a part-time job, etc.

If university is maybe not for you, there are plenty of vocational qualifications you can do, like BTEC or NVQ. Many of these can even be studied online, and would provide more practical skills for the workplace.

I do wish to study history and politics, but I know it’s not a subject typically imagined to pay the bills.

Actually, no that's not the case.
Political jobs can pay very well.
Teaching History can also pay well over time, or working as a researcher, it's interesting.

Hi there,

At Royal Holloway, we also provide a range of bursaries and scholarships for undergraduate home fee students. Depending on your household income, you may be eligible for one of our bursaries. You can explore your options here: https://www.royalholloway.ac.uk/studying-here/fees-and-funding/bursaries/. Full details of our scholarships for 2024 entry are still being confirmed, but once they are, they'll be updated here https://www.royalholloway.ac.uk/studying-here/fees-and-funding/scholarships/

We also recommend researching what student finance you might be able to get. Student Finance England provide loans to help with course fees and living costs. You can find further information on this page: https://www.gov.uk/student-finance

We hope this helps,

Best wishes,
Royal Holloway, University of London Rep
Hello,

My name is Haya and I would like to reassure you that a lot of Universities have support available for students, even offering scholarships and bursaries for students. There is also student finance which can help from the government.

My advice would be to live in Uni accommodation in your first year as they are usually the most affordable as bills can be included.

UCLan has a whole finance team that can support students https://www.uclan.ac.uk/study/fees-and-finance

Best of luck and don't forget to seek support,
Haya- MBBS 5
