Contraception Question

Hey!

I’ve been on the pill for about two months now, and haven’t had too too many problems. I suffer with bad periods (to the extend the pain is so unbearable I’m unable to stand), which was why it was prescribed to me.

However, I find I’m so, so angry all of the time - and I really don’t like it.

I’m really at a loss of what to do, as the pill does help with my bad cramps. So, I suppose there’s a few questions here.

- Has anyone had the plastic coil fitted? Was it painful? Any side effects?
- Did you experience any impacts with the contraceptive patch? I did ask for this originally, but they didn’t seem keen on giving it.
- Any general advice?

Thanks! 🫶

I had a Mirena coil. The insertion was very uncomfortable until they offered to use numbing gel, after which it was completely fine (if I knew it was an option, I would have asked straight away). I didn't really have many side effects, other than irregular bleeding for the first 6 months - had a normal period the month after insertion, then no periods for 4 months, then 1 very long bleed for a bout a month and after that, my periods went back to normal. I could also feel the coil, which was a bit annoying at times (e.g. would get a random twinge from it moving during vigorous exercise at the gym). I think that's about it in terms of side effects. Happy to answer any questions you might have about the coil 🙂

No experience with patches, sorry. The NHS contraception guide is very if you are looking for advice - https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/contraception/
