Hi everyone! I've applied and been offered a place to study Korean at Sheffield this year. I just wondered if anyone else is doing the same course, or maybe a course in the same department. I'd love to make some sort of groupchat so we can all make friends before we get there in September Maybe there's already a groupchat I'm unaware of but

Yep, I've been working for a couple years, and I've also been self studying Korean for a year and a half! I originally wasn't even going to go to Uni so it was a last minute decision at the end of January and I rushed to write my personal statement, haha. As for what made me want to learn Korean, I've been into Kdramas and Kpop for over 6 years now, and I started studying to be able to understand the content I'm consuming. It was originally just a hobby but now I'm thinking it could lead to something in the future🙂 Can I ask why you're interested in this course? And best of luck with your exams!!

Oh amazing! Well congratulations especially since you say it was a rushed decision! I have also liked kpop and kdramas for 6 years and wasn't interested in much else so just thought I'd apply. Although Sheffield is my insurance and for my firm uni I'd be doing chinese. I started learning Korean just before gcses but stopped for A levels. And thank you very much! I think I'll need all the luck I can get haha!

Thank you so much!! Oh wow Chinese is super impressive😵 I'd give up before even starting with all the characters you have to learn hahaha. And it's cool that you've already got a little bit of Korean under your belt, as well! I'm curious though how does the Korean with Japanese course work? Is it a mix of learning both languages, and if so is there more focus on one of the languages over the other?🤔

Thank you! I think I've forgotten most of the korean now though hahaha. There's more of a focus on Korean and thats where you spend the year abroad but you also learn some Japanese to a basic conversational level i think (or as they call it Japanese for non-specialists) and theres some Japanese culture and history modules as well. But overall its more focused on Korea.
