If the option of not doing a 40 or 60 credit dissertation is there then you would have to do an additional 40 or 60 credits of modules. Look at your module grades to date - if you are good at coursework and exams then opt for the extra modules over the dissertation.
Dissertations are all dependent on your own motivation and your relationship with your supervisor. If they are helpful, you will sail through but if they are d*cks - then you will struggle.
