All blood tests negative- still ill! HELP?

Hi, I am new to the forum so this is a bit of a long shot but I'm just sick of visiting my doctors recently and seeing if anyone could shed some light?

Okay so around 10th January this year I got tonsillitis. Was put on antibiotics for a week, and got a bit better but I wasn't convinced the infection had gone completely, but I left it. In the meantime I was also visiting the doctors because I kept feeling really sick, sometimes dizzy and constantly tired.
When I say constantly tired, I mean it. I would wake up in the morning and barely make it through one lecture at uni before having to come home and sleep.
The doctor did a full blood test for this and my thyroid result came back abnormal. He said I was hypothyroid, although he wanted to do another blood test in 6 weeks time to check on my thyroid before giving me any meds for it.

In the meantime, everything has gone wrong with me. I have had tonsillitis again, still feeling sick and SO tired. I can't concentrate on anything. I have had major mood swings including depression. I have never felt so low in my life. As for the tiredness, I can get a full nights sleep and then have a 4/5 hour nap in the middle of the day. And still be tired! It's so frustrating.

So I've been back to the doctors earlier this week as after 2 batches of antibiotics for my tonsillitis I still feel awful! The doctor sent me for some blood tests to re-test my thyroid and also for glandular fever.
I felt really optimistic about this thinking everything would finally be diagnosed, but no!

That would be way too easy. Both those blood tests are normal and all I'm left with is the nasty bruise from that needle!
I'm at my wits end with this and I really need an answer, or if someone has been through a similar thing?

Anybody tell me what could be wrong with me?
Thank you so much! (sorry for the long story!)

When they did the blood tests do you know if they tested for anemia? That could explain the tiredness and lack of concentration.

I don't know actually. Well they did a full blood screening for diabetes, liver function etc. I think it could have been included in that test? The second time they just did a test for TSH levels and Glandular fever.
See another doctor/specialist.

It does make a difference! I've seen so many doctors for my digestive issues in the last year and have only recently found a good one who actually seems to care!
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME/Post Viral Fatigue.

All of these would explain your symptoms.

1. You forgot anon. Delete the post by clicking edit and choosing the delete options then repost this again but click the anonymous button. I will edit this quote to keep your anonymity.

2. You should go to another doctor and get a second opinion. When my mum went for blood tests they mixed up or lost her blood test results about 5 times. :colonhash:

Agree with the man above (digitalis).

With the whole still swollen glands thing though I'm not surprised they tested you for glandular fever, I would've assumed that to be the cause.

It sounds like what I had a few years ago. I got tested for anemia but it came back negative. The doctor said even though my iron levels aren't low enough for it to be classed as anemia they could still be on the low side. So I take iron tablets (ferrous sulphate- can buy them over the counter) and eat healthily and do exercise and it worked
Thanks for your responses.
I'll have another chat with my doctor and maybe see a different doctor, get their opinions on it.
I'll also look into chronic fatigue/ ME and see if my symptoms are related.
Thanks a lot

I have been going through a similar thing on and off for 2 years, and literally 3 days ago was told all my bloods were fine again (although, I'm gonna double check what they tested and see if anything is borderline, I only got my results over the phone up to now.) I was convinced it was my thyroid as it runs in the family.. apparently not..

It's quite probably post viral fatigue (for both of us) but that's not great as there's not a lot we can do :frown: so I'm determined to find a 'treatable' cause! Haha.

Major hugs -it sucks not knowing what's going on! Message me if you want.

Haha, thanks. I wish it was due to my extreme awesomeness, but it's just from the Manchester access programme - you do this course type thing and they reduce your offer at Manchester for any subject by 40 ucas points if you get in.

Thanks though! Haha.

Could be a Strep throat. As for your tiredness you could have a deficiency of something like vitamin D. My mum was always tired all day and started taking vitamin D (calcium) tablets and is doing brilliant now.

I'm no medic just a wannabe medic lol

If it was strep, the antibiotics would have dealt with that.
Aw thanks everyone
Gonna look into these thing and see what my doctor says too.
Jadio - I'm so glad there's someone else who has the same problems! I was even starting to doubt I felt ill at all, since there's no medical evidence that I am! I'm still convinced that it's glandular fever because I've only heard what the receptionist has to say so far. I'm also baffled that I got diagnosed with an underactive thyroid about 5 weeks ago, and now the receptionist says i'm fine? I'd definitely like to hear it from the doctor!

I hope you get better soon, I'll let you know if anything new comes up that could affect you.

I had those symptoms, and all my tests were clear so they decided I have ME, possibly brought on by swine flu, although there's no proof for that. Definitely get them to test everything just be to clear
Sorry to hear youre unwell. This is very similar to what happened to me. I have M.E (CFS) and unfortunately it sounds like thats what you have too and theres no current treatment and certainly no cure. You just have to take it easy. PM me if you want to chat x
