Should I Study Psychology?

What's everyone's view on a psychology degree? And what about a joint psychology and French degree?

I do psychology.
It's definitely a science. It's very applicable so you can do anything you want with it (almost literally), but you need to do post grad to get anything good out of it. It's quite a generally edifying course, as it is so broad.

If you don't wish to do further studying afterwards, I wouldn't suggest psychology if you want a high paying professional job.

I'm going into the cognitive neuroscience area, really the reason why I chose psychology.

French - languages are very useful when it comes down to having to deal with people of other nationalities, such as in charities, large multinationals, etc. Though again, not sure what just a French degree would get you with regards to a well paid profession.

Thanks so much, it's great to hear about psychology from someone that does it! I always thought i'd pursue post grad but recently i haven't been sure. I've been wanting to specialise in forensic psychology for forever but read that there wasn't many jobs in the area so i've been considering other options. I thought maybe i'd just be open to internships and changes of mind at uni and see where it takes me but you've inspired me to reconsider.

I wouldn't worry about the direct provision of current jobs in the area too much if you're really into it - its always very applicable to careers such as in the police force if you would be into something like that. Admittedly, being more of a bio guy I don't know that much about the area.

I would always recommend following your dream ... as long as it's not completely out there.

I'm from Sheffield, so wanted to stay home rather than going and spending lots on living expenses. Sheffield University didn't want me, so here I am at Sheffield Hallam . Lovely place in honesty.
About to do Clinical and Cognitive Neuroscience starting Sept, luckily the course fits my interests perfectly.

This is so reassuring, all i get told from people when i saw i'm doing psychology is 'Are you sure? theres like no jobs? you have the grades to be doctor/lawyer/optician' but honestly i find it so interesting. Well i always found shows like Criminal Minds fascinating (i know its exaggerated and probs not realistic) and how a persons behaviour could tell them things about their childhood and life. However i think sometimes any field of psychology would be interesting for me.

Clinical psychology did cross my mind actually but i've forgotten what it entails
Well i'm in Scotland so i'm more able to afford living expenses. I'll be starting at Edinburgh uni in september and i'm super excited! I'm a bit worried though because i've become an incredible procrastinator and hate essays and wonder 'imagine if i did all that hard work for uni and i couldnt even complete the course'. But then some people say it's way easier because it's one subject that you love doing.

Edinburgh has a great reputation as both a great city and university... sweet. somewhat jealous about your lack of fee's.
Hahaha... speaking of procrastination... I'm meant to be doing my work right now. everyone experiences procrastination it would seem.
It's my last 2 days of my degree then I'm finished. Being somewhat complacent with my last pieces of work. will get there eventually... due tomorrow :P
Psychology really is what you make of it... there's so much you can go into, lots of respected fields.
The most competitive is clinical psychology, if you fancy a challenge. Though neuroscience is more my thing :P

Yes thank you! Yeah it was a tough decision between Edinburgh and St.Andrews but i heard Edinburgh was more internationally known and reputable and i thought if im moving away or even travelling i might aswell go to a nice social city.
I know i feel so sorry for you guys down in England, honestly it must suck! I'm pretty grateful haha.

Neuroscience seems too sciencey for me, i started to hate chemistry and biology when i took them at Higher level.

Yeah, I feel sorry for us guys in England too! 2 days left, 2 pieces of coursework! lol.

Yeah, theres the obvious ones like the Oedipus theory and then experiments like the Stanford prison experiment. But i didn't take psychology at high school - they had no one to teach it There was a small bit in Higher Human Biology but that's it - just deindividuation and and internalisation and stuff.
I can't believe you have 2 days left but you have course work to do haha.

I got 69% first semester and I only want a 2.1, so got complacent haha. Have 9% to play with.
There aren't really many more than that to be honest - and me too, I did sports science for the medical stuff, as A levels bored the hell outa me.
There's the weapons of influence - the stuff by Cialdini on manipulation I found rather enjoyable... though a rather specific area of psychology

I have no idea what that means i dont know anything about uni grading haha. So you only need 60% to get a 2:1 (which is the highest grade?)
I just read up on that the now and it's interesting, i've seen this in use so many times and some of it seems common sense. Part of psychology that i find hard is the fact so many things are just classed as common sense that i just dont question why sometimes and i should.

That's one of the paradoxical beauties of psychology - elucidates things that are in plain sight that you don't realise

Most get 2.1 and 2.2, not many people get 3rds.

Well I feel it is both really hard and unnecessary. You can get where you want with a 2.1 even a 2.2 isn't the end of the world, albeit not favourable. 1st and 2.1 are considered the same 'post grad points'.
3 years does wreck you. Try to aim high, then it makes the loss of motivation wreck less havoc on your work... that's what I have found... they tend to equal out

Is your degree 3 years? Mine is 4 but i wonder how much ill get done in the first year haha.
Sounds like sound advice, my last year at school has felt disasterous because ive gotten so lazy but it might just be because i'm already into uni - i got an unconditional from glasgow in november and after that i couldnt help but feel demotivated like **** this **** don't matter and i dont really give a crap about my exams anymore.

the best tip I can probably give you is well, take it easy and don't burn yourself out... try and keep your head above water and stay happy. 4 years is a long time!!
