Muslims currently at uni, what is your honest opinion of the culture?

either contribute something constructive or keep your mouth shut :h:

If you were not so much irredeemably deluded, a person telling you that your self-imposed asceticism has exceeded all bounds of rationality, modernity and mores would be much more beneficial than hordes of fellow blind people supporting your extravagances.
You said you lived about 1 hour away from your preferred 1st choice uni, so why not just commute if you're worried. And then find a house with Muslim girls when you're in second year?
Agnostic ex-muslim here, but I'm basically culturally Muslim. A social life at uni as a Muslim is either a) socialise with Muslims almost entirely, or b) attempt to socialise outside of ISOC (Islamic society) and feel slightly to entirely ostracised. The trick is finding a good group very early on in your university life; if you do, you tend to band together based on similarities. Later on, everyone has already established social groups so it's difficult to mingle and make friends in the same way.

I'm sure a practising Muslim wouldn't compromise their religion.

Except religion won't help you get a decent job once you get out of uni. A degree from a reputable university that you turned down just to commute however, will :h:

You do realise I was born and raised in the UK right? The things you mention are not new to me. It's their country too, if they want to do those things that is their prerogative... If they are loud I can just put ear plugs in.

Your OP was so paranoid that I couldn't imagine you were raised in the UK.

I may not get my 1st choice... Also I really really don't fancy travelling an hour to and from uni every single day.
Can feel this thread hitting 10+ pages tonight.

My sister commuted to uni from home everyday in her first year and it was an hour by train. She'd get home at like 8pm every evening and she hated it so much that she moved out in her second year. You'll tire yourself out.

I know some unis have a no alcohol free accommodation zone, single sex accommodation and when you apply for accommodation, some unis let you note down that you're not into partying/drinking so they pair you with people who had similar results to you.

It's not paranoia, it's apprehension, I don't know what to expect... hence why I am asking.

The concerns I've mentioned is basic Islam. I just want to know what to expect so I'm not super shocked when I get there.

You mean the tuition fees and living costs?!

Fair enough. Surely you have plenty of other good unis within reasonable distance in London though?

Would driving be less hassle than you having to worry about random boys in your flat or the other things you've mentioned in your OP? You seem quite worried but you have a reasonable alternative (driving) which isn't that bad. It would only be for first year anyway so it's not like you're going to do it for 3 years straight.

I will buy my own mini fridge then and keep it in my room

Some unis are against that.

Assalam alaikum,

This is what I've found so far:
You can obviously just mind your own business and study if you want but there are very few people like this. Eventually you'll find that one of the best things about uni is meeting new people, going to new places and experiencing new things. Having a good social life is quite important at uni.

If you don't want to drink alcohol, no one's going to force you but it's worth noting that even most of the Muslims are going to go out and have a drink sometimes. Without drinking or at least going to places where people drink, I think you're going to struggle to make friends outside the Islamic society. In terms of music, you're not going to be able to avoid that. At almost every flat, the flat mates get together on Fridays or certain days and just chill with music. I don't like it but I prefer to just mind my own business and get on with my work instead of bothering them or joining in.

In short, yes you can live as a strict Muslim at uni and study all day but that's not the point of uni to be honest. Most people, including a lot of Muslims, take advantage of the opportunities at university to socialise and to build new friendships. University is supposed to develop you as a person and allow to meet many different people and go on new experiences.

I can say that this is absolute untrue. The idea that not drinking will mean you'll struggle to find friends outside of the Islamic society is laughable. I'm quite an introvert and even then ended up with tonnes of friends, as most others - I didn't have to drink or go to a bar/SU and drink orange juice while watching others drink alcohol.

You'll probably end up with friends even if you tried to have none to be frank.

I'm probably gonna commute for first and second year since london rent prices are ****ing huge.
OP what is your firm and insurance out of curiosity?

Well if my dad buys me a car then I wouldn't mind driving but I really don't want to take the train everyday. The underground sucks as well in rush hour.

I'll do my best to get a same sex hall and I'll see if it's possible to get a hall with only Muslims but I highly doubt it. Maybe we can rent privately, I'll have to see.

Can't say I blame you. That's why I was against even moving out to a London uni in the first year and didn't apply for any London unis.
You need to be realistic and accept that going into halls is a complete throw of the dice.

You could(as I did) end up somewhere reasonably quiet and mind your own business or it could be 24 hour parties and gang bangs in the living room. If you're really that worried get a bedsit or a studio flat to yourself.
