Undergrad or Postgrad Nursing

I've applied for both undergrad and postgrad childrens nursing courses. I have offers for both but didn't know which would be best. Postgrad is 2 years but I imagine much more intense as you still need the same 2300 hours for NMC registration.

Anyone know the main difference or intensity of postgrad?

Also, has anyone heard back from Kings College? They said 3 weeks & my interview was 5th Dec but they're now closed for Christmas.

You’re right that the PG course is more intense as it’s squeezed into two years, but you end up with a higher qualification. In the end, this doesn’t have a huge bearing on your career as an NQ nurse, employers are after registered nurses. Some say it can lead to accelerated career progression, but I’m yet to be convinced on this tbh. The stuff that advances your career is post registration courses and clinical experience.

In the end, it’s up to you, the end result is pretty much the same, do you want to get there in three years or would you like to do it in two and challenge yourself by working at a higher academic level?

Hello,

Thanks for replying! I would ideally like to do 2 years, the PgDip at LSBU. People say to me to go to KCL if I get an offer because it is considered a more prestigious university but surely that doesn't matter because I'll still be a nurse either way.

I'm happy to do 2 years but worried it may be too intense juggling academics and placements in such a short time. I want to be a clinical nurse specialist in the long run.

I have the same problem I just don't know what to do! if I choose kcl intense 2 year programme will I have time to work on the side?

It might be worth popping a thread in the KCL section of TSR and asking there, there’s bound to be someone on the course who can tell you.

Hey,

I'm a current 2nd year nursing student and those that have come into the 2nd year often have a previous degree and experience within the NHS so supposedly the theory learnt in the first year you should already know as it is covering most of the basics. Hope this makes sense a little, those who have started in the 2nd year have found it good but its take a little tie to find their feet as we have already had a year here but still love it and meet the grades and placement hours.
