RAF Qualifications Trouble

Hi,

I recently applied to join the RAF as a WSOP and after waiting 6 weeks to be processed to an AFCO, i was contacted to update my application in regards to my Maths GCSE grade.

In school, i only managed to get a D in Maths at GCSE which i know is below the required grade to join in this role. That being said, im 29 now and have since completed a Bachelors Degree with a 2:1 that i was able to join after studying a Foundation Joint Honours at the University of Derby as seen here: https://www.derby.ac.uk/undergraduate/access-courses/foundation-joint-honours/

After informing my recruiter that i achieved a D in GCSE but have acquired the equivalent of a GCSE C in Maths through my other qualifications, my application was withdrawn. Obviously this was massively disheartening for me as i'd waited 6 weeks and have been training for even longer.

After finding out my application was withdrawn, i was unable to respond to the recruiter to further explain my situation so i contacted the recruiting team using the Live Chat on the website. I asked the recruiter whether this qualification would qualify as an alternative but received the answer "it is a completely different qualification."

I'm really confused as to whether or not my qualifications are enough to get me into this position as i was under the assumption that they would. I have even contacted my Uni about this and have recieved a transcript which says states that either 3/5 GCSE's at Grade C including Maths OR a Foundation Degree is required to join the Bachelors Degree that i completed.

I'd really appreciate if anyone could help, i understand my situation is very specific to me but someone may have had a similiar thing happen to them.

Thanks!

Hello,

There is a spreadsheet that you can download regarding educational equivalent qualifications. Maybe have a quick browse and see if your maths qualification is listed.

Hope this helps.

What is equivalent to what in terms of qualifications is determined by each employer or organisation. The University of Derby might consider that a Foundation Degree is sufficient to get you into the main degree programme, but that's got nothing at all to do with whether the RAF consider it is the equivalent of GCSE Maths to get you into the RAF.

Sounds like you need to ask the AFCO what they accept as equivalent to grade C in GCSE Maths and then take that exam asap.

Hi buddy, while I have every sympathy with your situation, and I have no doubt that you could achieve the minimum Maths grade, unfortunately the RAF are usually hard over about the minimum entry quals, including the basics of Maths and English. I'm sure @RAF_Adam will be along soon and can give you the official line, and hopefully some good advice. For what it's worth, I think it would be easier to get yourself enrolled on a crash GCSE Maths course and pass the exam, rather than churn about the likely equivalence of having the Maths skills through your degree course. It matters not a jot what the Uni says, if the RAF says NO, it means NO.

PS I was a long serving WSOp in an iSR role (actually AEOp, but the name changed in 2003) and was never the sharpest maths brain, but I had enough skill to do my job effectively. Depending on which WSOp role you were interested in, you might need numeracy skills to a greater or lesser degree. However, I would suggest a strong physics foundation is more important for all roles.

Good luck with your application, and I hope it all works out for you.

Hi

It will depend on the content of what you studied in within the degree and whether it meets what's required by the RAF to cover the required GCSE level.

If you send me a DM and give the content of the course, specifically the maths element, I may be able to advise you in more detail. But as has already been stated, what the RAF requires can sometimes differ to what is given out from a civ level. Functional Skills level 2 is considered GCSE grade C for civ jobs, we don't accept it, for example.

Kind regards

Hello

I originally applied as ATC SNCO, and have 4 GCSEs and was informed on live chat that my grades from college would be equivalent to 4 GCSEs therefore I met the minimum of 5 for the role.

Later on, AFTER doing the CBAT and listing my GCSEs in my application which was initially accepted, I went to do my filter interview to be told no qualifications are equivalent to the minimum standard.

Was a mistake on the RAFs end which they apologised for, but I also take credit as I should of contacted the AFCO directly in regards to it before applying. I went ahead and changed my role, did my AST & interview, now waiting for my medical in a few weeks.

You have a few options, either do the GCSE you need and pass it or join with a different role, although most jobs require a minimum of English and Maths at Grade C.

I never got to the CBAT, my application was withdrawn based on not having a GCSE in Maths after waiting 6 weeks. My equivalents were not even considered.

Thanks to everyone who responded but i think i'll try to contact the RAF directly to solve my issue. It's not that i don't have the qualifications; i've checked on the website BEFORE applying to make sure my qualifications can be accepted in leiu of not having a GCSE in Maths in which a Foundation Degree is accepted.

Yeah following to what I said, I was told by my AFCO that the GCSE requirements have to be the GCSE quals and cannot be equivalent, which includes degrees, A levels, anything.

Although I would contact your AFCO if I was you to confirm, as this is what I was informed, you might be told or given a different option as all cases are unique.

Hi

No, there's an entire web page and spreadsheet on the RAF Recruitment website that shows what we accept in lieu of GCSEs and A levels, there are many different options. However, they do need to meet the required level/grade for the role you've applied for.

Kind regards

GCSEs (or equivalent) are required, even with higher education, because they are the only qualifications at which someone will have studied subjects such as Maths and English in depth. Unless a specialism is required, an application could be made with A-levels or a degree in Art, foreign languages, Music, even Animation, if a candidate has the UCAS points; however, whilst these require written work, its not the same as showing competency in English, hence the basic requirements still need to be met.
