28 and going to uni

So I already understand that being 28 will be allot older than the majority of the other students.
This will be my first time attending a university so only know a little of what to expect from my sisters experience, but I just wanted to hear from possibly other mature students on any advice on what I should do.

I’d like to make some friends so living in halls is defiantly up there for accommodation for me but at the same time I don’t want to be surrounded by 18/19 year olds.
But on top of that I don’t want to be left out so to speak.

Sorry if my questions really abit of a jumble, but if anyone can give me advice on where to live and socialising/making friends as a more mature student (28) that would be great.

P.s. yes it’s obvious I’m older I have quite a few tattoos ect...

You can request to be placed with mature students in accommodation (which is ages 23 and up)

Ah ok that’s great, is it still quite sociable?
And in the mature accommodation will me being 28 be too old or not so much?

My age is only the only concern I have.

There’s no upper limit on mature accommodation so there could easily be people in their 30s and 40s in mature students accommodation although I think unis try and group the younger mature students together (so people who are in their 20’s are all together)

So from your opinion do you think aslong as I apply for a mature accommodation I won’t have any issue fitting in or anything along those lines?

Also how different is the mature accommodation at unis?
Price wise, is it still a shared kitchen?, en-suite bathrooms? Ect...

Yes, apply for mature students accommodation.

What type of accommodation it is depends on the uni. Some simply have flats of mature students in the Normal accommodation and others have sepearate blocks specifically for them
It will most definitely be a shared kitchen but I can’t say with the bathroom. You will need to look on the uni website

Hi! I'm in the same position, I'll be 28 just after I start. I know unis will try group mature students together and I'm not sure if you'll know the answer but I'm going to ask anyway, just in case! Do you also know if many mature students choose private over uni managed accommodation and if they do, do the private accommodation providers try to group mature students together as well?

Hey dont let the age be a factor, because its not. I started uni at 26 years old. And now im 28, and im at my final semester of year 2. Although i do think its slightly different making friends i dont think its a factor at university ☺️

You'll be fine! I did an undergrad degree and I think only 5/18 of us were there straight from High School. The oldest student was 28 when we started and there were also girls who were 25 and 26. I went back for my Masters aged 27 and trust me, I know the fear. But again, in the class were 40 and 57 year olds! And everyone was welcoming and friendly. The difference from the High School behaviour and attitude to University is so different.

you'll be fine! I started my degree at 25, in my friend group we have 2 19 year olds (were 18 when we started), me at 27, a 25 year old, a 43 year old and a 58 year old, you'll have no issues finding friends and fitting in! i remember how daunting the prospect was for me but in uni age doesn't really matter so much when making friends!

Hi @Leonski,

Universities are typically very diverse, full of students and staff of all ages, religions, races etc. I bet that you won't be the oldest student at university, in fact, my mum joined university last year at the age of 49! So, it's never too late to follow your dreams. I shared halls with people who were also in their late 20s, and had no problem with it at all, we all had different preferences but we respected that and got on well. It does vary from course to course, and obviously, a lot students join directly from their A levels at 18 - but I had people in their 30s on my degree and it was great, it brought a mix of opinions, experiences, and preferences to the table. You should never feel like you won't fit in, if it's something you're passionate about... go for it!

I thought I'd share my experience with you. I've been at university for a while now, having finished an undergrad and postgrad degree. I started my current degree when I was 22 and like yourself, I was worried about being an older student. I had nothing to worry about as I met two of my closest friends that I'm still in touch with today. There’s lots of ways to make friends at uni either with people on your course, through the societies you join or flatmates and other people that live in halls. Most universities hold freshers events during the first week of the semester. Lots of societies attend freshers week so it's a great way to meet some of their members if you're interested in a particular society!

Students that live in halls vary in age between 18-30. When I was in first year one of my flatmates had changed uni courses a few times and another was doing an exchange year at the uni. However, the age gap between us didn’t really matter and you couldn’t really tell the difference! You’ll probably live with a mixture of students if you choose to live in halls. Students usually move out of halls after first year and look for a house with friends they've made on their course or their flatmates they were living with in halls. In my second year I lived in student accommodation with my friends from my course then in my third year we moved into a flat together.
