it's only really beneficial for the rear view camera/sensor

idrive is ok, but bmw aren't going to be on the same level as apple/google

so you get a better experience on the ipad vs bmw sat nav

Brodit make really nice holders for mobile devices. I have one for my iPhone, been using it for almost a year now with no issues. It stays on securely as the holder is made specifically for one car and one device. The complete package is quite expensive (around £30-40) and there is some drilling/screwing required to put it all together, but it really is worth the effort.
