MY BRAIN LITERALLY HURTS. I have been overthinking how to phrase this sentence for too long. help. IpromiseI'mGoodAtEnglish.

"I thought we were past this"
"i though we were passed this"

I'm trying to say I thought we weren't in a particular predicament anymore.

Which is it: Past or Passed

please explain why if you can too :smile:
Past
I think it's the first one..but I'm not entirely sure.
Its a very good question. I understand your predicament.
Isn't it passed :s-smilie:
Past = noun
Passed = verb

Edit: but past looks right.... I'm no help :bawling:
Sorry :getmecoat:

Past
Technically, both are correct.

"I thought we were past this" = past is a preposition referring to time.

" I thought we were passed this" = passed is a verb i.e I thought we were passed the parcel.

Exactly this :yep: (In hindsight bar the second sentence really, but the concept remains)

So in your case "past" would be more appropriate.

I walked past a tree.

I passed my exam.
"Past" is a noun, adverb, adverb and preposition depending on context. "To pass" is a verb.

Therefore "I thought we were past this" is correct as you are using it as a preposition relating to time. Alternatively, you could say "we have passed this issue now" as you're showing that you have performed an action.

I thought we were past this

I thought that we had passed this

Past is the adverb; passed is the past participle if using the perfect tense.

Past is an adjective.

Passed is a verb.

Hence you use past.

No, "passed" cannot follow "to be"
Pass is a verb, past describes previous tense, so past is correct. You "passed" the building, or in this case if you used passed it would have to be "I thought we had passed this"; whereas you went "past" the building or "we were past this" i.e. it's now behind you in terms of tense.

The second sentence is incorrect - since to pass something is a verb, the sentence would have to be "I thought we HAD passed this".

Yep, you are both right. My mistake!

You'd be better off saying "thought we'd passed this" rather than "we had" though that said, that'd sound a bit poncey :lol:
