Muslims currently at uni, what is your honest opinion of the culture?

Salams.

Muslims who are currently at uni or who have been at uni, what is your honest review / opinion of the lifestyle there? Did you find it very difficult to avoid haram situations?

I have this weird view in my head of there being fitnah around every corner you turn and pressure from the people in your halls to "socialise" when there is alcohol and music every time.

Would you say that it's easy to just mind your own business and study or is it really distracting with all the temptations around? If you had to give some important advice for a muslim going to uni, what advice would you give?

My dad is already freaking out about me going because he thinks it's going to be like a brothel... he said students don't always go out and they have parties inside most of the time.

Non Muslims, would you be bothered if a practising Muslim was in your hall? Someone who wears the hijab, prays, fasts etc?

Not a Muslim but tbh having a social life without some kind of alcohol was impossible for me. Everyone says go to a society, what society is this? The teetotal society? Most uni societies I went to were only on for like an hour a week and then went to the pub.

To be blunt, I wouldn't care. They can do whatever they want to in that regard; I have no right to interfere.

And no I wouldn't care if flatmate was Muslim, we'd probably get along actually.
It is a lot like a brothel in honesty.
You can mind your own business but good luck having a social life.
There are plenty of students at every Uni who dont drink and dont live a wild social life - from all backgrounds. Despite what you might have heard, those that party every night are a definite minority.

In Freshers Week there will be lots of stuff to do that doesn't revolve around alcohol and 'getting wasted' - promise. Reassure your Dad that its your choice what you get involved in at Uni and actually all he needs to do is trust you to make the right decisions.
I wouldn't care at all if my housemate was a practising Muslim. As long as they weren't a bad housemate in general.

I wouldn't mind if a muslim was in my hall, as long as they don't pray out loud, and if they buy their food. I don't eat halal meat. I wouldn't mind eating kosher because it doesn't have a prayer

I wouldn't be bothered at all. I'll be going to uni in September and I don't drink for personal reasons, so -- I understand some of your worries from a different perspective and to a lesser extent, at least!

For one thing, I think it depends where you go. There are unis where 'lad culture' etc are abound, or have very good nightlife around, and there are unis which are much smaller and quieter and don't necessarily have the clubs around, which brings a different atmosphere - this is probably something worth looking into, e.g. I've applied to RHUL which is a quieter campus with not many drinking spaces in/around it. My older brother goes to York and in his first year a lot of his drinking was just pre-drinks in the common room -- when I went to visit him I sat in there with them for a bit and I didn't feel any pressure to be involved in the drinking. Even when they mistook me for a uni student! :P

From what I can parse, though, nobody should force you to drink or do anything you're uncomfortable with -- and if they do, any decent human being will tell you they're certainly not the kind of people you want to be around.

I also found this thread in the related discussions, I hope it helps you! https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=4035845

Freedom of speech, unless you mean excessively "loud".

Well I'm certainly not putting my food in a fridge full of bacon and ham! lol. As long as they respect my beliefs and I respect theirs it's all good.

If they go to a mosque it'll be fine, but they shouldn't be allowed to pray in the hall. If they do I would sing church songs.

I went to a tiny university and would strongly discourage it, if anything the larger universities will have more diversity due to sheer numbers.

Why not?

You'd have every right to do so, lol.

Muslims would pray in the privacy of their bedroom and it's a quiet act, I'm sure you would not be disturbed.

They should understand that majority of people will feel uncomfortable with them doing so, and they need to understand it is not a muslim country.
A Muslim friend at Uni who was from Malaysia had been told all sorts of stories about the way British non-Muslim girls behaved and that essentially they were all slack harlots, and that all western men were sexual predators.

Once she'd arrived here she realised it was nonsense, and that it was a form of 'propaganda' to paint the West as deviant and immoral. She actually enjoyed the freedom she had at Uni - she didnt let her usual standards of behaviour drop, just that she didnt have to be quite so careful about who she talked to, and that she could go out for the night with friends, go to clubs, dance, not drink, and still have a great time.

You don't have a right not to hear something just because you don't want to hear it, just ignore it.

And?
