I'm going to apply general engineering to some university and to the others I gonna apply mec engineering(since general eng is not available in these universities) So, do I need to write that I want to do mec eng and talk about mec eng a bit or just talking about engineering generally?

Very good question. I asked this question (well, similar) to the admissions boss at York, their answer was awful so maybe mine is better.

I did similar to you, I wanted to apply for chemical engineering at 3 (Manc/L'boro/Nottm), general at 2 (Ox/Nottm) and Systems engineering (L'boro). Basically I wrote my PS about engineering throughout and then a paragraph about the specific area I wanted to do, Chemical Engineering. I still got a place at the chemical engineering places; they want to know you're interested a wide area of engineering and also liked that paragraph on chem eng especially. I got in Nottm for integrated engineering (failed Oxford after interview) but as chemical were both options in those two courses, the small paragraph didn't offend them. I got a place for systems engineering too, although my PS was nothing to do with it lol.

SO my advice is, make it towards engineering with a small paragraph on mech eng specificially. Remember, if you do general eng, mech eng will be a large part of it so telling an admins tutor you're very interested in it will not put you at a disadvantage, just so them you know about the different areas.

Hope the above is of help to you.

I had the same problem and somebody told me to write a personal statement for mechanical eng, because sooner or later, in your general engineering course you will specialise in sth. (eg. mechanical)
