is it awkward going straight into 2nd year of uni

I'm doing a HNC and for some unis I'm eligible for 2nd year entry. What do you guys feel are the pros and cons of this? I'm really scared I'll find it intimidating considering the cohort have already known each other for a year. Will it be harder to make friends etc? Also will it be harder to settle into the course itself and get along with the lecturers etc? I have a friend who just completed her degree and said most direct entry students found it harder to settle in and make friends and also did worse in exams and coursework because they haven't been able to get used to the professor's teaching and marking styles. It really put me off and she also said I'd find it harder to find a place to live if I'm moving to another city as everyone will usually move in with people they already know from 1st year etc.
Of course it will be harder for the reasons you mentioned but you'd finish earlier.

Any tips on how to make it easier to settle in?
