Manchester or York for English Literature masters?

I have offers from Manchester and York for the English literature MA and I’m undecided where to go.

I’ve never visited the uni at York but I have at Manchester but I’ve visited both cities and like them both equally I’d say.

I love that York offers a great selection of modules which aren’t available at Manchester. I’ve been out of uni for a good few years and am worried about that as well.

If anyone can offer any insight into either course that would be great

Hi EmmaFlorence,

First of all, many congratulations on your offers to York and Manchester! Both are fantastic universities

I'm a Graduate Ambassador and studied my undergraduate and postgraduate degrees here. In regard to the university, York is campus based in comparison to Manchester, which has a main site in the city centre which is referred to as it's campus.

York's campus is vibrant, friendly, picturesque and tranquil. There's lots of student cafes, restaurants, bars and dedicated postgraduate study spaces which I found extremely useful when writing my masters dissertation. Here's some resources below, so that you can see the campus for yourself:

- Our beautiful campus video
- Teaching and study spaces video
- We also have an online, 360 degree virtual tour
- There is also a student vlog channel, so you can gain an insight into what a York student gets up to

I really relate to your concern about being out of study for a few years, as I had a gap between studying too. What I would say is that York has a friendly, caring community and as a department, English is fantastic at supporting it's students. It has a wide range of extra curricular activities and societies that you can get involved with to develop your skills and socialise with your course mates: https://www.york.ac.uk/english/writing-at-york/writing-community/. You could also check out our student blogs to find out more about student life as a postgraduate.

Although York is a city with lots to offer, I found during my time here that I felt safe and at home. My friends who came just for their postgraduate degree said the same too, that it was very easy to settle in.

If you have any more questions about York or your course, please feel free to drop us a message. We would be more than happy to support you with your decision in finding the right place for you

Thanks,
Laura
