why can't I apply to more than 5 unis in UCAS?

Is it possible to apply for the clearing courses in July if already used my 5 chances back in January??

Ucas provide extra and clearing as a way to apply to additional choices if you don’t get an offer that you like from your original 5 choices.

5 is enough for most people (more than enough tbh - most applicants waste 1 or 2 choices on universities they have no intention of attending). You can only go to one.
Because it keeps the system manageable for the universities (imagine if everyone applied to Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, Durham etc. just because why not? they might get in...) without turning into "rich people can apply to dozens of unis, poor people can only afford to apply to a few" (charging per application would be the obvious way to avoid people applying everywhere).

Yes, you can go through clearing if you don't get into one of your five. That's what it is for.
