Adderall in the UK

Hello! I am an international (United States) student applying for University in the UK. In the US, I am prescribed adderall by my psychiatrist and have letters written by said psychiatrist detailing my ADHD diagnosis and need for said medication. If I get into University in the UK, will I be able to get my adderall prescription? I realize I may have to get private health insurance (as I read that the NHS won’t prescribe it), but I am wondering if getting the medication is even possible in the UK. Thank you for your help!

To clarify, I don't need the brand name 'Adderall'. I am asking if stimulants are prescribed in the UK.

Hey there,

Adderall is not licensed in the UK and is actually a class B substance. If your were to be prescribed medication it would be highly unlikely Adderall they only prescribe in very specialist cases and you would most probably be prescribed an alternative.

What I would advise
- Speak to your doctor in the US to ensure you have all the documentation in relation to your diagnosis and explain Adderall isn’t licensed in the UK
- when you get to the UK ensure you get a letter to confirm you are studying
- Find a doctor in the area you are studying so you are able to register and make and appointment and bring all your supporting information of your diagnosis.

Hope this helps!

Best wishes,
PU

Hi,
In the UK, Adderall cannot be found anywhere. However there are quite a few stimulants prescribed for ADHD in the UK.

1- Ritalin, this is methylphenidate and does it not contain amphetamines. It the first line of treatment for ADHD.
2- Lisdexamfetamine, this is a slow acting version of dexamfetamine. It is usually the second line treatment for ADHD. This is probably the closest thing to Adderall XR.
3- Dexamphetamine(DEX) IR. This is the IR version of DEX which is most similar to immediate release Adderall because Adderall is 75% DEX anyway. This does not seem to be prescribed very often but can be found.

There is a non-stimulant medication called atomoxetine which seems to be an alternate to the conventional stimulants I listed above.
