The Student Room Group

What to do if you don’t secure halls? (PSA)

A lot of people each year oh here panic when it comes to getting accommodation and they find they have trouble getting in to university owned accommodation so if you don’t have a place to live what can you do? Well you have a number of options:

1\ Get your self on a waiting list and commute or stay in a hotel until a place in halls opens up as people fail to meet their first choice conditions or change their mind or drop out (a girl in my brothers halls dropped out on the first day.).

2\ Go private there will be people looking for a replacement flat /house mate or someone to make a group so they can afford the rent on a nicer place some estate agents specialise in student let’s (like Cryers in Southampton.

3\ Private halls there are halls operated by private company’s like unite these halls can be a bit nicer than the university ones the rooms will sometimes be a bit bigger and often en-suite (I men the can be en-suite in university halls too but not always) they are usually a really good option some will have amenities like a gym on site or a shop so that’s pretty cool too I know Solent sold a couple of their halls to private companies a few years ago (LFW and Emily Davies).

Hi there,
That's very good advice! It's true that if you don't get university owned accommodation (or if you don't want to live in university owned accommodation) there are plenty of other options and there will usually be availability even after results day. Private student accommodation is always a good shout (like you said, you can get some nice facilities included in your rent) but even putting yourself on waiting lists is worth doing, it's likely that people will change their minds etc.
