Day in the life of a Health and well-being student at De Montfort University

Hiya! :hello:

I just thought I’d share with everyone what a snapshot of my day is like as a student at De Montfort University. But first I thought it would be best to introduce myself. My name is Maddie, I am in my second year studying Health and Well-being in Society. I have three part-time jobs; I am a young carer to my younger sibling, and I live in my studio apartment (a 10-minute walk from campus.). For some context, the upcoming assessment for this module on epidemiology was a group presentation on a chosen disease (as a group we chose Cancer and specified Lung Cancer.)

Before 9am

After giving in to my alarm (I usually set three one at 7:15, 7:45 and 8:00) I wake up for 7:45am I set 3 alarms because the 7:15 prepares me to wake up, 7:45 is the time I wake up and 8:00 is my last warning to get up encase I am extra sleepy that morning. Depending on the morning I will make myself some breakfast, usually Weetabix with chopped strawberries :yum:and then I give myself from half an hour to 40 minutes to get ready for my 9am lecture, leaving my studio at 8:45.

9am till 12

I walk to Hawthorne Building which is on our beautiful campus at De Montfort it usually takes me 10 to 15 minutes to get to that building and finding the correct floor and door. I sit in the lecture with my friends:grouphugs: and listen and make notes on epidemiology (as this is the current module we are learning about.) :cyber: Usually, my lecturer finishes around 10:45 and we have an hour till the next workshop, so me and my friends will either pop into town to a local café or stay on campus and go to our Student Union to let the time pass by. This day we went into town and grabbed a hot drink from a café as winter is coming and we were all feeling the cold.:tee: One of the great things about the university is the location as just a 10-to-15-minute walk and you will be in the centre of town by the clocktower.

12- 17pm

At 11:45 we aim to leave and make our way back to campus to our other Health and Life Sciences Building Edith Murphey for 12:00. For an hour and a half we learn further in depth about the lecture we sat in and have the opportunity to discuss with classmates about our ideas and what we would do in this situation. At 13:30 the rest of the afternoon till 15:00 is designated as self-directed and for this module as we have decided to do a group presentation we worked on the presentation. By being self-directed we can make the decision of how long we want to stay depending on how the project is coming along so far; usually I will stay an hour or so just discussing with my group making sure everyone is happy and just doing some further research.

After leaving Edith Murphey I walk back to my accommodation, passing through the Castle Gardens which is a quite picturesque with all the autumn leaves and squirrels running around and I stop by Tesco. I walk back to my accommodation and find something to keep myself occupied for a few hours by just chilling out, cleaning up, socialising, preparing my tea or going to the gym which is just downstairs in my accommodation. On this day I cooked pasta for tea and set in the fridge and then went down to the gym just for over half an hour and made my way back and freshened up before work.

Work:call:

I am a Student Ambassador for the university:heart: and this something I have mentioned before in previous TSR threads and it’s an amazing opportunity to have as a student and one of the reasons being the various shifts offered. For this night I had telemarketing from 17:00 20:00 so at quarter to five I set my laptop up at my desk and make sure I am ready for the evening.

Enjoying my evening

After finishing work, I grab my pasta from the fridge and pre-pare tuna and sweetcorn and have a cold pasta salad whilst watching something (usually I will have YouTube on, or a series; at the moment I am rewatching F.R.I.E.N.D.S, something I will always do during the autumn/ winter seasons.:santa3:) After this I make sure everything on my To Do list is crossed off and I am pre-pared for the next day and then just chill out in the evenings whether that is carrying on watching whatever, read, crochet and again socialise with family and friends.

Hope this helps as I think everyone is a bit curious as to what us students get up to!

If you have any further questions please do ask!
