Uni choices dilemma, any advice or opinions?

Hey guys, so I will be going back to uni at the end of the year after successfully getting funding back from compelling personal reasons (yay). I will be 27 and have studied before at Lancaster before restarting my first year and dropping out in the restart year. I have a few options and kinda would like to hear your opinions about my choices and recommendations because I am stuck atm not.sure which to choose. I have my grades already because I'm an old man and all my offers are

Management and Information technology @ Lancaster University. I studied here before and this would have been my preference to return to. I absolutely love the campus and it's facilities and the university has an amazing vibe to it. Still have friends I made there. The course is probably the least appealing out of all my offers but the uni is the best. It's more management heavy than computing so that knocks it down for me.

Business Information Systems @ University of East Anglia. Probably the favourate at the moment. Seems to be the closest to lancaster in terms of style of uni and it's well regarded. Not been to Norwich but heard it's a lovely area and heard good things about the uni. The course is basically computer science with business which appeals to me greatly. Loads of societies too.

Business Information Technology @ Aberystwyth. So this is a hard one for me. I'm basically garunteed £2,000 in my first year just for choosing to study with them due to prior grades. This can help a lot with costs of finding a place to stay over the summer, although I have the choice to stay with my brother if I want to (he lives in nottingham tho). It's cheaper, free gym membership and the course is decent. Pretty much very similar to UEAs. The uni appears to have a relatively small student population though and I'm a bit worried about socialising in terms of societies and stuff. It has 50+ pubs but I don't drink really so.its hard. The campus doesn't look as good as the others and because of how small and remote the town is I'm a bit worried about finding jobs (compared to Lancs or Norwich)

Computing Information Technology for Business @ Bangor. Probably my last option. Haven't really considered going here. No financial insentive and not the most prestigious uni (but then again neither are most my choices). Was really a last choice to fill space but interested in opinions on it.

I work full time and I live so far away from all my choices bar Lancaster, I'm in Blackpool, so getting to my choices is very costly, difficult, time consuming and Id be spending about 5 hours travelling to each and spending about 3-4 hours at the unis before having to travel 5+ hours for £70-100 which I can't really afford to do. Just looking for some opinions on my unis and choices. I know you can't make a decision for me but I'd be interested to hear any input you guys have. Thanks.

You appear to have more cons than pros for Aber and Bangor. If UEA is the favourite course, make the effort to visit it and then make your decision between UEA and Lancaster.

Not much help in regards to the course as that’s not my subject but I’m from Norwich and Ik a lot of people at UEA including those in their 30s+
It’s a gorgeous city with lots to do, night life, green spaces, transport everywhere and wherever you live you’re in walking distance of at least one small shopping area of some form.
As for the uni, UEA is a very high rated uni and they have amazing outcomes etc and the campus is gorgeous it’s surrounded by green spaces but they also have on campus cafes, bars and they often hold events and concerts! Ik not all unis specialise in adult courses but UEA certainly encourage it

Happy studies I wish you luck whatever you choose 🙂⭐️

+ also to add Norwich is a very affordable city as well as they have LOADS of community spaces, free clubs and food banks/cheeper food options.

If you did head here, One place I recommend is Soul Shop with Soul church, they’re a lovely modern church and they welcome everyone not just religious people. You sign up at the small shop and you get entitled to so many bag fulls a week based on your financial situation. Each bag is £4 to fill to the brim and they have lots to pick from. My family are far from religious but we use soul shop regularly it’s very cheep and helps a vast amount if that settles your mind!

Hi @RossLan,

It's great that you are considering UEA for your studies!

I know that choosing the right place is no easy task. I've been there... I've studied in 3 different universities (BSc/MSc/PhD) and am currently at UEA for my PhD. Generally, UEA is lovely, it produces super high impact research (which is super important, as it reflect the quality of the teaching and employability). And you're abosulutly right about the societies, we've got over 200! Norwich as a city is fantastic, we are very close to the sea side too, if you like water activities 🙂

If you've got the chance, please do visit the campus, as it might help you decide. In the meantime you can chat to students and academics here: https://www.uea.ac.uk/ask-us.

All the very best,
Daniel

I decided to travel to Norwich for their applicant day for the 21st. Hopefully this helps me with my choice and I enjoy my day.

Hi Ross,

I am a student representative for Aberystwyth University. It is great that you have so many fantastic universities to consider. Regarding your thoughts on the campus at Aberystwyth it is true that it is smaller than some but that can be really handing for getting between lectures in time! The campus has a great community feel with an Arts Centre which shows films, plays, comedy shows, workshops and classes, a thriving students union with a bar and shop, several cafes and plenty of study and social spaces. We have a huge variety of societies and sports clubs which you look through on the Aber student unions webpage; over 100 clubs and societies Societies & Volunteering Projects (abersu.co.uk) and over 50 sports clubs Sports Clubs (abersu.co.uk).

there are plenty of jobs available in town in shops, cafes and restaurants but the university also has a great scheme called AberWorks which allows students to get jobs within the university such as ambassador roles, cleaning, library, research, and mentoring roles.

Hope that helps and if you do have any more questions please do ask. Good luck with your decision making process.

Laurie.
Nothing wrong with Bangor, I did psychology there.

Hello @RossLan,

It's good to see that you have so many great options available to you!

Have you considered distance learning? If you have concerns around time and money spent travelling, then this might be something you're interested in. At LIBF, we offer a range of fully flexible online degrees - allowing you to study from wherever you are, at your own pace. We allow applications any time of year for our courses and you can also choose to start your course any day of the year - so you can get started when you're ready.

Based on what you have said, I think our BSc (Hons) Business Information Systems (https://bit.ly/3IyrFnC) and BSc (Hons) Business Management (https://bit.ly/49NYt7T) degree courses might be of most interest to you. We also offer a range of IT degrees that you may be interested in (https://bit.ly/49JT163).

If this is interesting to you, you can learn more about distance learning here - https://bit.ly/4a9Degr

I hope that this is helpful. Good luck with making your choice!

Thanks,

Becky
