SOAS or City for law

I have three offers, but I'm mainly considering SOAS or City for law. After uni I want to go into corporate law, which one would be better? Which will top firms consider more?

SOAS is part of the university of London which means you can use UCL and other facilities. You can also take intercollegiate modules and I believe SOAS has a better reputation. I’m leaning towards choosing SOAS myself

SOAS is one of my choices too. They are often in UCAS Clearing too but so are City, QMUL, RHUL, Goldsmiths and Birbeck too.

I would choose SOAS, as they have a better reputation and you can choose to study a paper like Taxation at one of LSE, UCL, KCL, QMUL or Birbeck.

Also, for me, SOAS is a direct train on the Elizabeth line to Tottenham Court Road and short walk to the SOAS campus.

I’m trying to decide between City and SOAS too, I feel like more people know about City, even Though SOAS is generally better for Law from what I’ve gathered. SOAS has a better reputation amongst firms etc I think, so I’m leaning more towards that choice!

Hi @noteworthy-pick-,

I'll chip in because I am not sure if the others will respond because it is an old thread. But I can give my two cents as someone who chose to study law at SOAS.

SOAS is known as the World's University because we specialise in the areas of Africa, Asia and the Middle East. When studying law at SOAS, you get more than just the traditional English Legal system, you learn about law from a globalised perspective which (in my opinion) is more interesting. We have modules on Islamic Law and Legal Systems of Asia and Africa and much more (you can find the list of all the compulsory and optional modules here). These topics (like Islamic Law) support students' applications because if you are interested in working in a firm that has branches in the Middle East or focuses on Finance then you will have an edge as you will have learnt about a topic that is a growing sector of interest here among UK firms.

In terms of teaching, at SOAS we have a focus on decolonisation. So, in effect that means considering all perspectives of the areas we study. Many of our teachers at SOAS are researchers, publishing their own work some of which is featured in the SOAS Library which is 1 of the 5 national research libraries in England - this helps a lot when you are doing research for your assessments!

SOAS is also quite reputable among firms in the UK and internationally. Our alumni have gone on to work at firms like Clifford Chance, Allen & Overy and Deloitte. You can also hear from our alumni on how Studying at SOAS had a massive impact on my career as a lawyer in Dubai.

If you have any questions, please let me know. You can also contact some of our students directly on Unibuddies.

I hope this helps 🙂
