Girlfriend disagrees with controversial issues

So I'm pretty much on the verge of having this girl as my girlfriend. The only problem is, she seems to have very different opinions to me over a couple of controversial issues. Firstly, she is pro-fox hunting, something I am very much against. And secondly she is against wind farms as they are an eye-sore.

I haven't really expressed my own opinions on the matters, but I know how she feels.

Reading back through my post, I can see how this seems a bit petty, and something I should just overlook, but these are things I am quite passionate about. Has anyone had any experiences similar to mine? Do you think we could work?

How about you grow up and just avoid those issues? How often will fox hunting and wind farms come up in normal conversation
Some disagreement in a relationship is fine. Try it; see if you agree on other issues. If you're disagreeing too much and it's affecting the relationship just end it.

I don't think you understand how much fox hunting, and the surrounding issues, are a way of life for some people. It's not just something that would come up very infrequently.

I really doubt that. What are you going to do when something actually important comes up in your relationship, you are both going to be screwed.

Maybe you should look up the meaning of the word controversial.

It implies that people dont necessarily agree with it. and if your going to let a difference of opinion stop you dating someone your in for a very long and mastabatory life.
It really depends I think on how much you bring up these issues and if her disagreement with your opinions truly disettles you. I'm personally on your side on both accounts lol. For my own situation my boyfriend has vastly different views on environment and sociological issues than I do. He also doesn't have any positive notion towards alternative healing methods like eastern medicine. All of these things are important to me, but I care for him and enjoy other conversations that don't involve these things because I know he doesn't care about them, have the education I do on them, or has different opinions. I think the frustrating aspect is that I can't talk freely about these topics that I love because I know they'll be tossed aside nonchalantly. My method is avoidance, not the best but it works. So like I said it depends on you and how important those things really are to you. For the record Sociology was my former major and Acupuncture is my current major. They're important to me, but so he is he. =) My outlet is discussing such things with friends and discussing other things that I have in common with his interests with him. We've been together 2 years. It works, but it's up to you.

I disagree with this. I'd pick my right hand over a fox hunter absolutely any day of the week.

Amen to that!
My professor who specialises in wind (Civil Engineer) said wind turbines are **** anyway.

imo if you talk about politics, religion, economics or any of that sort of thing with girls you like, you're an idiot.

It only leads to arguments, no one cares about your views, and it's not fun to talk about them.

Depends how passionate you are about these issues, and whether you are willing to 'let go' of the fact your partner disagrees with you.
I could never be with anyone that was PRO fox hunting or anything like that. Eugh, no thanks. Scum.
I can't believe this is a serious issue for you.

Well, I'm glad you're both on the same page in regards to more trivial issues, like economic exploitation, spirituality, poverty and the colour of her dildo.
It's not quite the same, but one of my very close friends and I have VERY different political views, to the point where we argued about it so badly that we stopped talking for a few days. We just make sure to avoid anything too political, which is a bit difficult cos we, obv, feel strongly about them.

I think, if these views are something you feel define you/a very large part of yourself, you have to look at long term compatibility. It's not just that she holds different views, but why she holds them. Try having a sensible discussion with her about the issues themselves, if it becomes an argument of epic proportions then there's a problem, if not you have a healthy discussion

if you like her for what she is and not for pro fox hunting or whatever it shouldnt be a probelm. If you dnt like her cause shes in pro fox hunting and stuff then your just a jerk dude
I don't know where to start here.

> Wind farms are a waste of time, it's just a stop-gap until we develop energy in better ways.
> Why you would even care about something so insignificant and irrelevant is beyond me.
> I actually think you're being serious. One of the most ridiculous posts I've seen on TSR taking that into consideration.

A few differences keeps the relationship interesting. Although I can see your point of view. Just consider whether what you have in common overshadows what you disagree on. If it does, go for it. It could be worth it and you don't know unless you try.

I couldn't be with someone who frequently flaunts around the countryside illegally killing foxes. I'd also get a bit pissed at him for taking such a selfish view on the climate, I hate that 'eyesore' excuse, I think windfarms are beautiful. However I think you should give it a go. It's not like you're going to get married, and it could really work. :h:
