Natural Sciences 2017 Entry

Is anyone else applying for Natural Sciences at university (other than Cambridge). I'm really struggling to chose unis and at the moment I don't have an insurance choice.

My son has applied to Durham and Exeter as well as Cambridge

Having the same problem - i'm thinking about having a joint honours course as my insurance, the grade requirements are lower for some than natsci. Where are you applying?

Yes, I really liked Lancaster, UEA, Leeds and Nottingham's courses and also considered Keele and Chester.If you have maths York's, Bath's and Exeter's also sounded good. I think about 15 universities offer it (although this may now be less as Leicester no longer run it). Every university runs it very differently though so thoroughly check how the course is run, entry requirements, required a levels and how long its been running (Keele are starting it for the first time in 2017 I think) before making a choice.I hope this helps :smile:

That sounds like a good plan but I have my heart set on Natural Sciences.
I'm planning on applying to: Nottingham (fav choice), Southampton, Exeter, UEA and Durham. Where are you thinking of applying?

Yes I have but it's unlikely I'll be able to do Chemistry on it as they watn A* predicted in Chemistry and I only have an A. My issue is they want A*AA much like most of the others and I'm worried I may have a bad day in my Chemistry exam and only get a B and then I won't have a back up.

How do you find studying all the sciences in your first year? (This is the bit that makes me worried about Exeter as i liked it all apart form this as I want to mainly specialise in maths with a bit of chemistry and psychology thrown in there.)

Hey Tia,

I'm doing reasonably well on my course (well as good as a student can be at this time of year). Although Nat Sci has longer contact hours than other subjects I feel like our time is equally spread out between all the subjects (Maths, Bio, Chem, Physics and Computing). As someone who didn't do A-level Biology and only AS Physics (studied Econ, Chem and Maths) I'm somewhat in the minority as most have 2 science A levels but I don't feel that disadvantaged as we essentially learn everything from the ground up which is what the first term is about. And what's even better is that all the lectures are recorded so if you fail to grasp what the lecturer was saying you can watch it back at your own pace.

If you truly want to specialise in maths and chemistry with possible psychology then maybe Nat Sci at Exeter isn't for you as you'll have to do bio and physics in the 1st at most (you can mostly choose chem and maths in 2nd year if you want though). I know that if you study Chemistry here you do have to sit modules of maths for sure. I got an offer from them for AAA but was surprisingly let in with ABB after a disappointing exam period last year. Hey ho! I'm here now!.

I picked Exeter as I had heard several great recommendations from many alumni and was likely one of the Russel group unis I could get into. Never went to an open day and first visited when I moved into accommodation, that's how keen I was.

But Exeter itself is honestly so nice, the staff are very supportive and the facilities are excellent. The town itself is one long road and has everything you could need. Since Nat Sci is a small group (around 50 people) and we have our own lectures, we get on, mix really well and help each other out if we're struggling in one subject where we can help the other where they're struggling.

I've applied for Exeter, Nottingham, Southampton, Bath and then Biomaths at Exeter - which incidentally is actually the same grade requirements :eek:

oh well!

Jokes when we both end up in Nottingham :wink:

Hiya! I've applied for NatSci at Lancaster, UEA, Keele and Bath. All the courses are really good, but each university runs it a little differently. I know that Chester have some compulsory modules, and quite a few of them are the physical sciences if that's what you like :smile:

The courses at Lancaster and UEA seem the most flexible to me

I have actually applied to both Lancaster and UEA (I ditched Exeter at the last minute). Have you heard back from any of yours yet?

I heard today from UEA and I have an interview!

Oh my gosh, that's great! I heard back from them both. UEA offered me an interview, but then Lancaster offered me an unconditional place. So I waited to hear back from my other places, decided I wanted to firm Lancaster and ended up making me decision before my interview date at UEA, so I never actually went to the interview :P

Thank you! They were A*A*A. But just to clarify, you really don't need that to get an unconditional. I have a few friends predicted AAA who got unconditionals for their courses
