Jude has been a student welfare advisor at Middlesex University since 2001. Before that, she spent three and a half years as a student advisor at Newham College. Generally interested - what are the most popular countries of overseas placements? Are you seeing any 'trending' at the moment?
Hi guys. I studied a year at university and dropped out. I'm now on a course I love and there is options to study abroad for a year. So my student finance would be 1 + 3 year course + year abroad. Does any body know if this is okay? I've heard you can get funding for 5 years and some people say only 3.. so I'm totally confused. I can't seem to get hold of some one at student finance to ask so your comments so helpful!

I am currently a first year undergraduate at QMUL. I have the opportunity to study in the USA in September 2017 but before I apply I need to know what maintenance loan I would get and would it be a figure for Semester one in the States and a different figure for Semester two when I return to London? Are there any other grants/loans I could apply for, eg. for travel? I understand you provide me with a form which I then have to show to my university. Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated. With thanks.

Am i right in thinking im entitled to have my travel exspenses paid for anything over 300 and something (cant remember the exact figure) is there a maximum on this? I believe it is for up to three return flights, but I am in Canada so even the cheapest option isn't that cheap, would it still cover it? Also how long, typically, does it take for reinbursement? Thanks for the help!

Hi, there are 4 rates of Maintenance loans depending on where you are living, if you are doing a Placement year, a Study Abroad year or partaking in an ERASMUS programme. Please can you provide more information.

Any support for studying abroad in Malta for a Medical degree would be welcome. So far 4 years self funded with no help from the UK Govt. In fact I feel that if I didn't come back nobody would care.
Hi, I am sorry to hear that you feel that way. Generally speaking, probably not given the detail provided. It will depend on why you have been self funded for the past four years. the rules are complicated, so it would be advisable for you to contact your specialist Student Welfare Adviser at your institution for confidential advice and information. They will be able to look at your particular circumstances in detail. Please note that their job title may vary within institutions.

Hi, it will depend on which country you live in and where you are planning to study. If you currently live in England and are planning to study in England then your institution can charge up to a maximum of £1850. However, some institutions do not charge anything. Fees can increase, so if you are doing the year in industry/abroad in your second year it is likely that they will have increased slightly in 2018. Please, note the fees vary between the countries. It will also depend on whether you are doing this as part of an ERASMUS year.

Hi, posting it should be fine. I would suggest that you include a covering note with the form and make sure you include your Customer Reference Number.

Hi, you can claim the costs of any travel you undertake over £303. However, reimbursement of travel is subject to your financial circumstances. It will depend on whether you are in receipt of the full amount of Maintenance support.
You can claim for travel between the UK and your University at the start and end of your time there and up to 2 other return journeys during the year if you receive permission to return home at vacations. The form states that you use the cheapest means of travel available, so would still cover it.

Hi, the USA, Canada and Australia are popular countries as well as Europe as students can apply for support through the ERASMUS scheme.

Hi, If you are a student that is not eligible for Welfare benefits the overseas rate of Maintenance Loan for a full year is £9654 of which £4987 is income assessed. So it will depend on your Household income for the exact figure. My understanding is that it would be pro rata. Please, ask your specialist adviser at QMUL to calculate this for you.
There is also a travel grant and you may be able to apply for other certain related costs. E.g. medical expenses and the costs of vaccinations and visas.

Hi, All students can get funding for the length of their course plus one additional year, so you are correct. You can get funding for the length of your course, 4years plus 1 year. As you have already studied for a year, you have 4 years of funding remaining. If you need to repeat at any stage in the future, seek advice immediately.
