Honest review of Sheffield uni
Could someone give their honest review of Sheffield uni? I couldn't attend the offer holder day due to Covid. I am deciding whether to choose it as my firm as opposed to Birmingham. I am applying for management. Cheers
I’ve only been to open day so i mean this won’t be very useful but i guess it’s better than nothing??😂
Obviously peoples opinions will vary based on course but in general i did like it and it was a nice uni. The campus was nice, i went for engineering so the diamond building they’ve got for lectures/ study spaces was pretty impressive. Town and surrounding area seemed nice enough as well. We walked for maybe about 10 minutes and there was a big street with loads of resteraunts/bars etc and i think was a shopping centre near by too.
Tbh my main issue with sheffield was the accommodation because i wanted shared bathroom. They have quite a lot of new accommodation which was nice and in a nice area but they were all en suite and the shared bathroom flats were kind of awful tbh. Majority of the accommodation was something like a 25/30 minute walk to uni as well, so i think most people get the bus everyday, but i think there is city accommodation which is closer but i didn’t see that and apparently it’s not as sociable.
I would be happy to go there but personally it wasn’t my first choice, and i mean i would’ve gone to basically any of the unis i saw bc they were all really nice. So i think either way you’ll probably love whatever uni you end up at whatever you choose!
btw i do have a pic of one of the en suite room bedrooms if you wanted to see.

Above poster claims city accommodation is boring but I’d disagree, it’s actually growing and pretty decent to live in.
I study languages and it’s been a mess because chronic underfunding of languages across the UK, BUT the staff are very pleasant and they do try so hard to help despite all the craziness around COVID and strikes, I do feel supported. I don’t think in management you’d have as many issues since it’s a big department and gets a good amount of funding, my boyfriend does it and he enjoys it overall.
Sheffield is a city University not a campus based one, so some buildings are a but further away which some people might not like, nothing is too far to walk to, but Public transport is good for when you’re tired or weather’s bad. It’s nice to be part of a city in my opinion and Sheffield is small enough to become familiar with all of it which is a bonus - places like Manchester are much bigger and a bit overwhelming in my opinion. The student community is close knit and the student’s union is good and has lots of events. Obviously the world is a little crazy right now, and freshers and stuff might not be a thing but they do usually really try to have a lot of things going on even after the intro weeks.
So in general you get friendly staff, city uni (depends on what you like), decent accommodation (I’ve heard it’s better than most but can’t compare really... mine was nice and en suites are great, shared bathrooms no thanks), nightlife and things to do are plentiful and you’re next to the peak district which is nice. Overall quality of teaching depends on department if I’m honest and strikes may be an issue in the future which is a UK wide problem, bigger departments do better overall (management is one). Best of luck in your choices!

Hi do you have more information on the public transport? Is there a direct bus that goes from ranmoor/ endcliffe to the uni? Thank you

Yes, it’s the 120 and takes less than 10 minutes
Show your student card and you get the set student fare, or download the bus company app and use their in-app tickets and it’s cheaper. The bus stop is only a 5 minutes walk from either accommodation. The 120 goes all the way through the city to the interchange as well so it’s a good one to know.Hi, I’m a current student too! I haven’t been overly satisfied with my course as it was poorly organised at times and some of the teaching is just not at a high standard, but then some of the teaching has been amazing and to a very high standard. The university as a whole and my department have also been amazing throughout the pandemic situation. Also, the university have refunded rent for anyone supposed to be living in halls rn, which is a lot more than most unis have done!!! They really do look after you in Sheffield, and everyone is really nice. I would honestly recommend it and I’m glad I chose to go there👍🏼

The walk from ranmoor/endcliffe to the train station is very very long! 45-60 mins, but like the person above said the 120 goes to the interchange (right next to the train station). Couldn’t fault the public transport there, it’s great! You can use the first bus app to see live times for the 120 as well which is really useful!

I’m not doing chemistry and don’t know anyone who is unfortunately! I know someone who does chemical engineering though and it sounds really good and well organised x

I have a few friends who did Chemistry and I'd say it's fairly good but not one of Sheffield's strengths in terms of undergraduate degrees, though they do get their students on good placement years. As above, Chemical Engineering, being under the Faculty of Engineering which is one of Sheffield's major strengths, does very well, however ChemE is a very different subject to Chemistry.

Hi everyone,
Another current student here, I'm Alisha. My experience of Sheffield so far has been great, I love the University layout, being a city uni I was worried about finding my way around but it is so easy and everything is pretty near to each other anyway, and I think it resembles 'real life' more than a campus uni in my opinion. Sheffield's facilities are great, I study in Allied health so use a lot of facilities in the Med school which are really great but also use lecture theatres across campus. The libraries at Sheffield are one of my favourite things, so much space, so many resources and most are super quiet so great to focus. Sheffield is also the greenest city in the UK, one thing I didn't actually consider much when I applied but trust me you really appreciate having some great outdoor space to walk and relax especially since the Covid-19 times. Student life is also really great in city whether you just want to socialise with food and shops but also for the nightlife which is really great. The student union is the best in the UK, they always say it at open days but you never understand how important it actually is until you experience it!. From Birmingham here and studying at Sheffield currently!
As much as Birmingham is my home, the Uni is average. There’s nothing special about it and nothing exciting. The accommodations are isolated and Uni buildings are spread out all over the city and can get quite far.
Birmingham is ALWAYS under construction, and its’s definitely not a walking city. Plus it’s expensive. The only good thing is a night out (?) if that’s your thing.
My friends who went to Birmingham said the teaching is okay and overall there is nothing special about the Uni.
Maybe I am jaded to Birmingham for living there so long?
Sheffield on the other hand, the Uni is incredible. The buildings, the teaching, the support, the people. I have no complaints about this Uni or the city.
Pretty much every building is a 3-8 minute walk from each other depending where you are. You can also walk everywhere.
Visiting both Uni’s, Sheffield definitely leaves an impression on anyone who visits.
