Question about Hugh Stewart, UofN

Anyone lived in Hugh Stew new block? The website says

'If you feel hungry outside of meal times, you will find pantries in each hall with a sink, kettle, toaster and microwave.'

but there doesn't seem to be any in the new block? We had a look at a different hall on the open day, a log corridor and that had a little kitchenette at the end, which sounds like the 'pantry facilities' the website mentions, but the HS 'new' block is set out as a cluster of rooms but no 'pantry' room. Might it be theres one pantry per block and it could be on a different floor to me?

Also we were told during the open day that HS was going to be refurbished for 20/21 students but it hasn't been, the desks and bookshelves are knackered, peeling wood, drawers dont open etc. Does anyone know if/when they will be refurbed? I'm guessing covid might have delayed things a bit, but it's difficult to find anything out on campus, theres not many people here. Hope someone can help x

The hall you describe that you visited sounds like part of Lenton & Wortley.

Not sure how moving in this year is working, you could speak to the hall tutors or the Warden, or email the accommodation service. If you get nowhere you could also try speaking to the student union for help.

There's not many people to ask. I emailed accommodation services last week but they have not replied. We did speak to someone on moving in day and he didnt know, as he had only being doing the job a week, and only knew how to hand keys out. Tried to ask another person later, who was maybe a warden, but he was very short with me and told me to read the handout we got with the key or look online, but the handout mainly says when my block is able to go to Cripps for meals, and general covid stuff. I just thought if there was someone here who has previously lived in the new block, they may be able to tell me where the kitchenette/pantry is?

The tutor teams tend to rotate every year.
And as freshers week hasnt started yet perhaps they are light on numbers.

But its pretty much the people you've asked dont know.
The warden should be more pro-active: you find their email/phone: https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/accommodation/current-students/contacts.aspx

Id try this and if you dont hear back from the accommodation team, you can try the SU (the SU are a group specifically to help the students, their is an SU accommodation support team. With covid you might have to contact them virtually although I think have an office in the portland building).

Thank you for the link, I had a brief online chat with the accommodation team last week, they couldnt help and they gave me the email you have given me above the 'welcome desk' in Cripps, they are the ones who have not replied.

The issue about the refurb can wait, it's not that urgent, but I really could do with finding out about the kitchenette facilities/pantry which are supposed to be in each hall. The current catering facilities are very limited (HS, Cripps and Lenton and Wortley are all having to go to Cripps for breakfast and evening meal. Theres no catering for lunch, no on campus cafes open either :frown: I will try SU if I can, I am finding the lack of information it a bit overwhelming at the moment though :frown:
Can you also explain the difference between the hall warden, hall tutor and the hall manager please?

Perhaps see if you can have an explore and find the pantry.

I think its probably a bit more overwhelming as you have moved in early and your flat mates havent all arrived yet.

Sometimes people lose emails. If its been more then a week I would re-email outlining your concerns about the pantry and lunch situation.

In a couple weeks time you will be more settled, and you'll have figured all this out.

Thank you. I have been exploring, only found the cleaners cupboard so far though! I'll keep trying!

I cant imagine their are formal tours, with the government rule of 6 and social distancing.

Are you sure they are not families arriving, people in the same flat walking around or students in the same household walking to the gym or similar...

Probably best to look at the welcome week info the SU sends out, perhaps their twitter.

I don't think there are any tours either. How many are in the group? It could be someone taking a couple of new students with their parents to the accommodation maybe, and that's how you get to know where the kitchenette/pantry is! haha! We didn't have anyone escort us to the accommodation, maybe it's an improvement on the previous couple of days arrivals experience.
Hi, I'm thinking of trying to get my own en suite here next year and I have a few questions if that's okay? Do you still have about 5 to 8 'flatmates' with a communal area to share and talk to eachother - usually it's the kitchen area too but I'm guessing since it's catered then this won't happen? (If you do would it be possible to send photos - I'm struggling to find some!) Are there plus en suite rooms (aka double bedded) or just ones with single beds? Also is this accommodation close to the Life Sciences Building? Thank you!
Hi Anonymous #2. I wrote a whole detailed reply and then it disappeared aghh! I will try and answer again.
There are no 'flatmates' as such. The catered halls are divided into blocks or corridors depending on the design of the building. I think maybe what you are describing is self catering, where you have small 'flats' within the accommodation, with a separate internal door, where a number of students share a kitchen for making meals where there is a table for sitting to eat/socialise with the people in your flat.

The catered halls are different. I eventually found my 'kitchenette/pantry'on a different floor, and it serves a whole block (each block has its own main entrance door, then you are in a hallway with rooms directly off there, and stairs to the other floors) Our kitchenette has a window, a microwave, toaster, kettle and fridge which is lucky, some are basically a walk in cupboard. Sadly we are not allowed to use it though as at is a shared facility and meant that if one person in our block was covid+ all the block had to isolate. Now we only need to isolate in smaller bubbles with people who share bathrooms. As I have an ensuite, I am a single bubble.

We don't get the 2 weekly room cleaning (I'm guessing the cleaners are busy with cleaning the communal areas and doors) the JCR is also not being used either. The catered dining hall is usually the main social space too, but not this year, all very functional, eat and then go, so my experience may be very different to what generally goes on in halls.

My room is ensuite plus, so has a 4' bed, little kettle, tabletop fridge (which is on the floor like the video) and the ensuite room too. I'm the only ensuite on my floor, the other rooms are 3 pairs of rooms, each pair sharing a bathroom. Other types of accommodation on campus depends on which halls and the design of the building. You could be sharing a bathroom with more people, and just have a sink in your room, others have shared study area in pairs.

This video may help you with what an average room looks like in Hugh Stew. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Ktp-66djaY

You will note that the beautiful old part of the building, which they use as the promotion photo for the halls, is not actually student accommodation, it is just the the attached building, and also a separate nearby building in a 'U' shape, which is th accommodation for Hugh Stew. (I say 'newer' in a loose term, as it is very very dated, the buildings and furniture are very basic, old and wornout)

Hugh Stew as the crow flies is about 350m from the life science building. Its in a fairly good central position for most things on campus, but if you want self catering within 'flats' where you have a kitchen to share with 5-7 people then Broadgate park might be a better option for you.

The meals are basic school dinner produce, and are very strictly portion controlled by the catering staff. Some things are more edible than others.

Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions, I will try and help.

Anyone know why the Hugh Stewart ensuite-plus rooms are already fully booked when the accommodation applications haven't opened yet?
